Saturday 30th July
Thanks to the organisational efforts of Linda and Simon, and the ability of Peter and Jim Thomson to construct a hybrid game of cricket that perfectly suited the circumstances, an enjoyable afternoon was had by all who took part.

For the record, we had two teams of eight players (well, one was sort of nine players). Each team provided four pairs of batspersons (there being three women involved in this game) who batted for eight overs each. Everyone on the fielding side bowled four overs each. Runs were scored as usual, or not, as usual, and five runs were deducted for each wicket that fell. Actually, having said that runs were scored as usual, I realise that this wasn't quite true because none were allowed backward of square. This was to make allowances for the relatively small number of fielders. This all took a little bit of getting used to, but worked very well.

The first Erratic team to bat scored something just over a hundred runs, including seven "outs" which had resulted in a deduction of 35 runs (in case you weren't with me yet on that one). At one point, the openers for the second Erratic team reached the handsome score of minus 11 runs, and although they and the team recovered somewhat, the total of seventeen "outs", costing 85 runs rather tells it all.

So, the winners were the Erratics, who all repaired merritly to the pub afterwards.
