Nomads v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 12 Jun 2008 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 6 runs

Match report I never found out who won the toss, but it was Ken Horne, skippering the Nomads, who stipulated that batsmen should retire at 30 – a resolution that, as it turned out, upset both teams equally.

After Nick Discombe had resisted the temptation to score any runs in the first over, the second over was a Sam Cook event. First ball – a four lofted way over mid-off: second ball – dropped at cover: third ball – outside edge for four: fourth ball – cut for four: fifth ball – an egregious defensive shot: sixth ball – a smooth on-drive for a single. And yes, Sam was probably at fault for Discombe’s run out, but Nick had, at least, started on the second run before the return came in. Insofar as Sam has a shell, he was sufficiently mortified to retreat into it for a couple of overs before holing out on the leg-side boundary (this was the only catch that the Nomads didn’t drop) for 19. Greg Richmond made it into double figures, which was 10 more than Martin Weiler and 7 more than Oliver Kirby. At the half-way point, then, we were a bedraggled 40 for 5. Enter Chris Ferro to join Al Brunt in a partnership that more than doubled the score. Exit Ferro on reaching 30, leaving Brunt to hit a towering six, and then run himself out with one ball to go.

To be honest, it didn’t look enough. And the Nomads, having sneak-previewed my original selection (Chris Cook and Duncan Chave among the thirteen), had called up Barnes as a ringer. But Richmond bowled naggingly straight to pick up two early wickets, and John Curtis bamboozled the opposition. It’s easy to see how that can happen. He takes a run about the length of Steve Harmison’s and then bowls a ball that needs his full weight behind it in order to reach the batsman. Not every ball, mind you. As far as variation of pace goes, he’s more a Vettori than a Panesar. The decisive moment, though, came with his dismissal of Barnes the ringer – a stinging straight drive which Curtis intercepted horizontally somewhere between the thorax and the abdomen. This was the first of four exceptional catches. Ferro took one nonchalantly at mid-off; Discombe plucked out of the air what would otherwise have been a six for the dangerous Pete Weatherhead; and Ed Keedwell, who tries to field at square leg to his own bowling, was round about short extra-cover when he pulled off a caught and bowled. Meanwhile, with darkness falling and Vukusic edging the Nomads towards victory, Ferro brought back Sam Cook for a life-threatening final over, and found himself reluctantly called into service when Discombe declined to bowl on the grounds that he’d already saved a boundary. Vukusic reached his retirement score on the last ball of the penultimate over, leaving the Nomads to score 9 in the remaining six balls. No chance! Ferro, who has more arms when he’s bowling than when he’s batting, restricted them to 2.

I’ve not played against the Nomads since the 1970s, but I’m told that this was a rare victory for the Erratics. Lovely ground: fair weather; good game.
