Match report Match Report: Andrew Forrester...

As a match report debutant I approached this task with some trepidation. Would I remember enough? Would I get some of my team colleagues’ wrong? Like a cub reporter I dug out a notebook and considered craftily taking a camera to photo the scorebook at the end of the day (Decided that was OTT on the day)

Entering the dressing room, was relieved that I knew the names of 3/4ths of the team already but daunted when I heard comments about Suki’s outstanding report last week (Being touted for the Report of the Year award if such thing exists?)

Anyway....the game got off to a late start with Chris I think winning the toss and electing to bat in a restricted (30) over format and put in the big guns to open – Duncan and Matt. On a dumpy pitch it was not surprising that both went aerial fairly soon and riding a bit of luck went smoothly enough past the 50 mark. The bowling seemed to hold no threats until Duncan having helped one full toss nearly into the river managed to miss the next one from Mr. Salt whose bowling action could be described as either economic or desultory. Shortly after I followed suit bringing Jonathan to the wicket and with his fleetness of foot injected some urgency in to the running between the wickets. Matt less commanding than usual was out caught in the deep due to Mr. Salt’s nagging length and the slowness of the pitch.

The run rate was around 4 an over and a target of 140 seemed possible especially when Chris came to the wicket after Jonathan was another of our team to commit hara kiri. Chris using his feet took the game to the opposition with some firm swishes of the bat from Paul too. Chris further aided our cause by dumping the ball in the Teign – soaking one of the Dunsford players who went paddling after it and softening the ball for when the opposition had to bat with it.

However the innings came to an abrupt closure when Chris, Armaan and David were out in quick succession. David’s nemesis it transpires completed a survey on David’s house last week – naturally we all hope it won’t be another demolition job. (Did someone tell me that bad puns were de rigueur or did I imagine that?)

Tea was taken with the sun continuing to shine and provide sufficient warmth for all to be in shirtsleeves except for Duncan who is too cool to remove his sleeveless. (Though not too cool to mess his trousers twice – see below)

132 run was short but seemed defendable when David and Sean opened the bowling. Dunsford - perhaps with the prospect t of rain arriving at 6pm – wasted no time trying to smack the ball around especially when either dropped short. The 50 came up at above the required run rate but with three wickets falling to the two opening bowlers as batsmen again had to go aerial to combat the conditions.

The match turned with the partnership between Hetherington and Davey. Chris rang the changes on the bowling sides but what chances that came our way were all difficult. Duncan made allot of ground on the midwicket boundary but the ball bounced out of his hand as it did ater on diving forward at ordinary midwicket. Sean at slip got a good left hand to a slash off Chris’s bowling and David at fine leg ‘helped over the bar’ a full bloodied pull off Penny.

By the time the two Dunsford batsmen were out the match was all but won with 5 wickets to spare and the match finished in mild weather ahead of the expected downpour.

As we tidied up after the end of the proceedings we were left to muse on what ifs....

. We had held our catches

Duncan Matt and Chris had not been thinking about their after dinner speeches at Clyst St George

We had soaked the ball more thoroughly in the river

We had consumed all the fish sticks and Freaky Fancies at teatime (For those unfamiliar with these confections a Freaky Fancy is like an oversized sponge dice covered in orange day glo icing).
