Lustleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 24 Jul 2011 at 2:30 PM
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 83 runs
Match report
by Simon Orpen
A casual perusal of the match statistics would lead one to believe that the John Lloyd trophy match of 2011 was a one sided affair. It started very differently with captain Matt Cook inserting Lustleigh in this 40 over game and a fine opening spell from Gareth Oughton and James Burrows reducing Lustleigh to 17 for 3.
With Lustleigh though you get one Wright out and another comes along. Today it was the day of M Wright who took the Erratics bowling apart with an imperious 136. It didn't help that the change bowling couldn't quite keep up the pressure and I particularly hold my hand up here being responsible for three of the worst overs ever bowled on this fine field and for the consequent loss of several fine cricket balls into the next county.
Matt Cook, Chris Ferro and our very own Mr. Wright bowled tidy spells but a total of 202 was more than we had been expecting to face.
After a fine tea, Ferro and Cook set about the reply. All went well until Matt broke his bat and was never quite the same with his replacement. A lofted drive saw him caught and from then on it was Ferro versus Lustleigh as the remaining Erratics could only muster 24 between them.
The fact that we would lose this game was apparent from about a quarter of the way through our innings and I did think what a shame it was that this was a fixed 40 over game and not a timed match. A timed match would have kept the game interesting until the end as the Erratics could have tried to hold on for a draw with no doubt that great spectacle of fielders around the bat and bowlers desperately trying to take the last couple of wickets. Alas, it wasn't like that and despite brief cameo from James Burrows with the bat the match ended in a thumping victory for Lustleigh.
After the game we spent a couple of hours at the newly reinvigorated Cleave which is once gain a fine pub with a welcoming atmosphere. The John Lloyd trophy once again watches from above the bar and that's perhaps as it should be.
