Match report
Match Report: Jonathan Kirby
It says it all, perhaps, when the captain of the Erratics chooses to open the bowling with the member of the opposition who has kindly agreed to make up the numbers for us. Perhaps it was sound judgement rather than desperation, however. Malcolm Raistrick did take a wicket in each of his first two overs, but he was more than well supported by other bowlers.
Gareth Oughton himself took 1 wicket for just 4 runs in his 3 allotted overs, including the final over which had begun with the formidable Kenny Clay facing him. Phil Ellis too was parsimonious, with just 5 runs and a wicket from his 2 overs. David Wright deserved wickets, but did an excellent job giving just 6 runs off 3 overs.
Furthermore, although not all catches were held, those that were missed were catches that might not even have been attempted by many Erratics. And the ground fielding was pretty good too. There's no way to gloss over the fact that we did give away 21 extras, but to restrict Newton Poppleford to just 118 felt like a good achievement.
In response, we stayed with the run-rate from the off. This is unlike us and would be something to be applauded if we had not also contrived to lose wickets at the rate of about 1 per over. Add to this the fact that David Wright tweaked a hamstring and had to retire hurt and the fact that Phil Ellis' mobility was impaired by a back injury that had prevented him bowling his 3rd over and we were in trouble.
After 10 overs, we had scored just over 50 runs, which might have been a good platform for an assault on a total of 119 to win, but we had not much left to give.
We were also facing, it has to be said, some pretty good bowling from Newton Poppleford and some excellent wicket-keeping from Mr Clay featuring quick stumping(s) and a really sharp catch to remove Gary Russen just as he had begun to threaten.
In the end, we rather petered out. There were 5 overs left, with 10 an over needed when the last wicket fell.
