Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Match Report: Jeff Haynes

It was a warm and sunny afternoon for the Erratics' visit to the seaside. A puddle on the rough outfield was drying out nicely after an earlier shower as Matt Cook 'agreed terms' with the opposition. In order to avoid the loss of balls into the stream, or onto the wooded bank, any straight sixes would not only result in the loss of a wicket, but also a penalty of 6 runs to the other side. [The rule was not enforced.] And there would be no LBWs... though this rule was subsequently waived to allow plumb cases, of which there would be deemed to be three! It would be a 25 over match, (though neither side achieved 20 overs) with batting retirements at 25 and a maximum of four overs per bowler. The Erratics were one player short, even with the young Harry Molins joining the team: Branscombe fielded a full side, including four keen and competent juniors.

Batting first, and with only 5 on the board, Chris Ferro walked after getting the slightest of edges to the keeper, and I followed a couple of balls later after skying the ball to midwicket. From 7 for 2 the Erratics recovered with Matt Cook and Paul Molins avoiding the straight sixes but peppering the new pavilion with sixes and fours. With both batsmen retiring the next wicket did not fall until there was 60 on the board. However, good catching, a barefoot bowler and a splendid spell from Ben Goodyear (3 for 1 in 3 overs... not bad for someone who normally plays for the Under 10s!), reduced the Erratics to 72 for 7. Matt returned to the crease, very soon to be rejoined by Paul, but when Paul was bowled for 26 in only the 19th over, Matt was left high and dry on 30, and the innings closed at 83 for 9.

Branscombe made a good start with hard-hitters Andy and Martyn who knew just where to place their shots and were quickly ahead of the rate, despite Jan Heaton asking questions of them (for which she was rewarded with 3-22). A couple of boundaries had made it into the stream and involved Varun wading in to retrieve the ball. One particularly costly over (as Report Writer I use my privilege to refuse to name the bowler) put Branscombe truly in the driving seat but once Andy retired Matt Cook shuffled his bowlers to good effect to postpone defeat as long as possible. Matt himself, Varun and Paul all took wickets, but it was Harry who turned in excellent figures of 2 for 12 off four overs (with his Dad taking one catch). Andrew Forrester was as quick as ever behind the stumps, contributing a fine stumping, but with both Ben and Ollie (another youngster) hitting sixes, Branscombe made it home, for the loss of 7 wickets, in their 20th over.

Branscombe have a lot of young stars who will serve them well in the years to come. The Erratics had their own young star today in Harry Molins, but perhaps needed a little more youth in their side? Certainly an eleventh player might have helped. Following pasties and chips in the Village Hall, the Erratics dispersed, a few of them hoping for better things when a reduced team of just six players return next week (...to compete in the Branscombe Sixes competition.)
