Clyst St George v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at Unknown
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 33 runs

Match report So we gathered. The start of another season. Do my cricket trousers still fit me? (I’m still a growing lad). Why are my bootlaces apparently further away from my hands that they were last season? (ditto) Appropriate April weather greeted us: squally showers, a cool wind and, (right on cue at 2 o’clock) another downpour. This elicited a measured response from Captain Thomson: “Bugger, bugger, bugger!’ So, a shorter match of 30 overs, to start at 2.30, was agreed.

The story of the Erratics’ innings was the story of Ferro’s innings. With three fours off the first over he seemed to have started where he had left off last season. His placement left nothing to be desired. In particular, the impudence of a shot threaded through the onside between two boundary fielders who (allowing for hyperbole) were almost close enough to touch was wonderful to see. The main support came from Chris Squire, the two putting on over 50 for the sixth wicket. In retrospect, this stand was the decisive phase of the game.

So, was 161-5 enough? After an excellent tea and an early breakthrough by James Burrows and Matt Cook, CSG’s third wicket stand appeared to be settling the match. At 76-2 with only 15 overs gone they seemed to be set fair for victory. Matt Cook’s splendid pick up and accurate throw and Ferro’s bowling of Laverick (who looked to be in a hurry and was scoring freely at the time) transformed the match. The loss of three wickets in three overs for 2 runs was something which Clyst never recovered from. Some good catching (Orpen and Mathers) and a typically smart stumping by Thomson ensured the Erratics finished on a high (or would have done if it hadn’t been so cold!).

Memo to Clyst St George (and C. Cook in particular): KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THIS MAN !!
