The match was preceded by a number of heavy downpours around Devon. This gave rise to some frantic enquiries as to whether the game was still on. The answer was “yes” and the sandwich-making duly commenced. It seemed that Dunsford had remained relatively unscathed and, save for a couple of feeble attempts at drizzle, remained dry for the afternoon allowing us ample time for cricket.

The omens were not good. Peter had forgotten the sugar (though why this mattered was a mystery as our straw poll suggested it to be superfluous). James had forgotten the scorebook. Gareth had a pair of bowling boots so new the box was sealed. How would this affect our performance?

Stoke batted first. James and Gareth bowled well, restricting the runs, but it took a little while to make a breakthrough. When Stoke’s number three arrived at the crease it appeared that he had never held a bat before. This was only partly true – he was a right-handed bat but suffered a golden duck in his previous game and thought that the answer to his problem was to bat left-handed! Although lasting longer than anyone expected, it ultimately proved a futile exercise.

Batsmen four and five put together a useful partnership which helped to push the total towards respectability. Armaan and Phil toiled but couldn’t shackle the batsmen. Enter Paul Molins for his first bowl of the season. You could almost hear his shoulder creak as the first couple of balls were bowled. However he was soon back in the groove with his slow, flighted deliveries returning impressive figures of 4-19. Penny provided solid support at the other end as Stoke were restricted to 128-8.

In the field Peter took a nice catch behind and eventually a stumping to reward his incessant whipping-off of the bails. Jonathan capped an energetic performance with two catches including a super one-handed catch running to his left. Sid also fielded well and took a low catch tidily. I managed a diving catch after having dropped the same batsmen a couple of overs earlier. A mention also to James for sticking to his thankless task at fine leg.

Peter dictated that I would open in spite of last weekend’s failures. So I walked out to the middle with Paul. Stoke’s opening bowlers extracted both bounce and lateral movement from the Dunsford pitch making scoring difficult. Paul soon found his touch, thumping a couple of fours before missing a straight one that hit his pad, having contributed 11. Jonathan also looked good and found the boundary twice before giving a catch, departing for 10. Sid then picked up where he left off last week and made sure that we kept up with the scoring rate, proving his theory that no nets is the best preparation.

We had made solid but unspectacular progress towards the target when I decided to “dance” down the pitch at Stoke’s slow, loopy spinner and managed to get myself stumped for a characteristically slow 18. With the score on 97, Sid at the crease and seven batsmen still to come we looked to be in a healthy position...

Sid pushed the score on to complete an excellent half-century. However, with just 17 runs required, Sid was bowled by one that kept low, finishing with 57. Armaan would have doubled his score had he not contrived a short run twice in quick succession. He was then caught off a thick edge before Max drove the ball straight to cover. The looming storm clouds seemed portentous. Phil and James restored a bit of confidence until Phil hit one up in the air for what seemed a certain catch and set off on a token run. The fielder dropped it and despite James’s protestations Phil continued running, leaving both batsmen at the same end and allowing the field to complete an easy run-out. Gareth and Penny were both caught leaving just Peter to help Phil get the few runs still required. Peter played a nice shot into the gap and called for two. Sadly he was not able to make his ground in time and we were all out for 121, a rather calamitous collapse.
