Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report [James Burrows Capt; Paul Molins WK]

Match Report [Dominic Prosser]

This was a cold day. Somehow, games at Chulmleigh had become associated with heatwaves in my mind, but this has changed forever. It was cold. Very cold. By the end of the 45th over that we gave Chulmleigh my fingers had pretty much stopped working, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who had wished the drinks provided mid-afternoon had been hot.

Perhaps it was because of the weather that there were only 10 of us, one of whom, Penny Price, ended up playing for the opposition who had only 9. This decision was taken when we expected to have 11, so the irony is that we fielded with 9 (plus a Chulmleigh sub) while they had 10, including Penny. Not quite sure how that happened.

Given the weather, it's perhaps no surprise that captain James Burrows bowled himself unchanged for a marathon 14 over spell. Mind you, he did take the first three wickets to fall, two clean bowled and one that temporarily warmed my hands a great deal. At the other end, Gareth Oughton bowled extremely well, but without luck. Erratic debutant John Nagle chipped in with 5 overs and a wicket, with further bowling contributions from another new Erratic, Jono Gurney, and from Dominic Prosser.

Tea was excellent. The pavilion was warm.

James' main concern about the batting was that we should not collapse. Faced with a competitive total, and in weather conditions that might have encouraged an early departure for the pub, a short innings seemed not improbable.

Guy Clarke had no such nerves. From the first over he embarked on an innings and clean and powerful hitting that would ultimately set us up for victory. Jan Heaton, his opening partner, provided solid support.

When Paul Molins joined Guy, we had two free hitters in form and enjoying themselves - it was definitely the best way to stay warm. The score raced along and we were level with Chulmleigh when Paul eventually fell, leaving Dominic to join Guy as he hit the winning runs.
