Match report
by Carl Knappett. (His career is in ruins...)
Stokeinteignhead at Combeinteignhead… some may think that this has the makings of a World Cup anthem, if slurred together in a certain way. But the WC, and the travails of the Swedes against the footballing blitzkrieg of Klinsmann, was far from our minds on this sehr sonnig Saturday afternoon. Any lingering doubts were confined to barracks when it transpired that we the 10 men and women of the Erratics would be fielding, although our leader chose not to divulge whether he had won or lost the toss. Anyway, a wonderful opportunity to feel the sun on our backs, and benefit from the additional exercise offered by the missing eleventh man.
For those fortunate to play at Edgcumbe Park the previous week, there was much salivation as Burrows measured out his run and prepared to test the opening batsmen of S-in-T. However, the radar was a little off and the splendid Cornish performance could not be repeated back in Devon. This may be attributed, in your correspondent’s opinion, to the batsmen standing a good two feet out of their crease which, in hindsight, was a wise tactic bred of experience. When combined with some savage hitting of the low full-toss, this was enough to disrupt line and length and earn the openers some quick runs. Hinds worked hard at the other end, without quite getting his prodigious swing to reap rewards, but it was a change of bowler at that end that did the trick. Prosser, pitching a little shorter, and thus able to exploit the tricky bounce of this wicket, encouraged a bit of fishing and Molins snapped up a sharp chance at gully. Soon after, Burrows put in a fast straight one at the other end that did for their number 3, and Erratics tails were up! However, their number 4 proceeded to play some pretty classy late cuts and soon they were in the runs again. Captain Kirby rang the changes, but the runs continued, despite some late wickets. Pearsons junior and senior both had a go, as did Molins, but these canny spinners will have more success on other occasions. Knappett tried to fire it in, and some erratic bounce was not a good sight with tea and the change of innings approaching.
Tea…tea tea tea. Opening bowlers Burrows and Hinds had evidently anticipated putting in some hard work on the pitch, as they had prepared a sumptuous banquet fit for Mike Gatting. I am sure he would have approved of the fine tortilla, and the doughnuts (jam-filled), but perhaps less so of the fruit.
So. 229 to win. Seems like a big ask. Until our openers, Molins and Pearson J, the whirlwind (ish) and the rock(y), began to set about the job with vim(to?). This pleased your correspondent no end, not only for the benefit that was accruing to the Erratics; due in to bat at no. 3, extra time was bought for digesting the Burrows/Lisk tea. But eventually Pearson J was out, and Knappett came in, and frankly didn’t do very well or last very long, popping a catch back to the bowler. More wickets fell, our fine skipper among them, and it did seem as if the ball was breaking through the surface at times and leaping up or holding up. An improbable chase for victory was imperceptibly and skilfully recast as clinging on for a draw. Which was achieved with no little skill and determination by Price and Turner, the former in particular exhibiting some fine technique in the face of rather testing spin. A hundred runs short in the end, admittedly, but it didn’t feel like clinging on, such was the control shown by these two. With seven wickets down, the reader may think back and remember that we were 10 Erratics – so surely some worries with only two wickets remaining? Fortunately, young Harry Molins, born the same year as Thierry Henry came to Arsenal, had been drafted in as an eleventh man…there was never any doubt. Your correspondent is now off to Greece for the summer, so καλή διασκέδαση, καλό καλοκαίρι, και του χρόνου!
