Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 23 Jul 2006 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
by Ian Lisk
Another hot and sunny day, Newton Poppleford, 40 overs a side. The wicket, dry and very grassy.
Newton P. won the toss and elected to bat but were soon 2 wickets down with not very many on the board due in the main to James Burrows who bowled accurately and quickly in returning 1 for 12 off his allotted 8 overs.
There then followed a prolonged period of 'drift' as Newton P. built a couple of decent partnerships and edged towards 150 with 10 overs still to be bowled.. The Erratics, of course, contributed to the afternoon's entertainment by dropping a few catches, missing a run out and fumbling the odd ball over the boundary ropes but all in all the team held it together pretty well. David Pearson bowled an excellent spell during this period and deserved rather more than his 2 wickets whilst Simon Orpen was just plain unlucky during his allocation.
Wickets then started to fall again with the introduction of Matt Cook and as the wickets fell so did the scoring rate. It took a few hearty blows from the tailenders in the last couple of overs to push the score up to a very respectable 187 for 8 although this did include 3.1 overs worth of wides. Matt ended up with 3 of the wickets ('You bowl very well on bad wickets Matt!' - P. Thomson, pub, 23rd July) whilst Ian Lisk also pitched in with a couple.
The feeling at tea was that 'we' would have to bat well to win. A circumspect start was called for on a wicket that was offering some lively bounce and rather variable pace.
Sam Cook opened nicely with a mature knock of 10 that included a couple of sweetly struck boundaries before being very well caught at slip. An Erratics wobble then followed as the next 2 wickets fell cheaply and the run rate slowed to a trickle for the next 10 overs. The faithful on the sidelines were getting decidedly twitchy.
Twitchiness turned to all out concern when Matt Cook out in the middle then started to complain of feeling sick and dehydrated. A glass of water and the departure of the 2 excellent Newton P. opening bowlers (0 for 5 and 3 for 29 off their respective 8 overs) then seemed to do the trick. Matt Cook and Matt Turner put on 92 runs in good time before Matt T. was unfortunately run out for 21. Matt C. was then well supported in putting together two 30 something partnerships with Jonathan 'hamstring' Kirby and Simon Orpen.
Despite Matt going to 3 figures the game was still there for the losing and had David Pearson's gloved chance first ball been held things might have turned out differently. As it was Matt struck the winning four with 3 balls to spare and finished unbeaten on a terrific 119.
The Erratics won in scoring 191 for 7 although Newton P. very sportingly exceeded our wide count in sending down 22 wides - 2nd top Erratics' scorer! The game was played in a fine but competitive spirit and Newton P. deserve a great deal of credit for their part in it.
