Match report
I think it is fair to say this fixture didn't quite have the sense of occasion to match it's long history this year, possibly something to do with a lack of familiar faces - no Wrights, for instance - lining up for the opposition. Anyway, we (that is, I) won the toss and decided to have a bowl with the intention of taking away from Lustleigh the option of batting for a draw to save the John Lloyd Trophy, which they held coming into the game.
We did a decent job of containing the opposition on a ground famous for it's short boundaries, but it was still a bit of a soggy early season track and 205 was probably a bit too much over par. Credit to the Lustleigh bats for some good individual knocks, perhaps most memorably that of left-handed South African Kenton Voss, Chagford's overseas player borrowed for the day, who blended patience, playing-late and hitting-hard before eventually succumbing to a Krupakar Special (a half-tracker that didn't bounce).
Voss also played a key role in our innings, accounting for 4 wickets with his off-spin, and despite starts from Matt Cook and Krups we lost wickets at key moments and struggled to keep up with the rate. Andrew Forrester dug deep, and alongside the ever dependable Ferro it looked like the two might snatch a victory for us, but again wickets fell to knock the wind out of our sails. Still, it was not until the final two balls of our innings, when victory was mathematically impossible, that we shut up shop to save face with a draw.
Due to a falling out between Lustleigh CC and the Cleve the pub had shut early to deprive us of the chance to pop in for a pint, we were told, so we had a stubby at the club house and promised our hosts we would be back to reclaim the JLT next year.
