Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Gareth Oughton reports...
As we made the short journey to Newton St Cyres, those of us in Matt’s car reflected on some rather chastening batterings received on the ground in recent years. Hopes in my mind weren’t particularly high for this fixture having featured in a particularly brutal affair against the Crediton Inn only a week or two earlier.
Nonetheless, we got things off to a good start with Gareth and Nick bowling tightly and picking up a wicket apiece up for their efforts; a steepling edge off an outswinger from the latter being beautifully snaffled by Jonathan behind the stumps.
It was on our first bowling change that saw the wickets really start to tumble; with Cockburn using the bounce in the pitch to pick up two (again courtesy of some excellent keeping on Jonathan’s part) and Mark producing another fine spell of bowling that made him the pick of the attack with a return of three wickets. The latter of the three is amongst my favourite Erratic wickets of the season - a hooping outswinger that started a long way outside leg; so much so that the batsman moved across his stumps, presumably expecting the umpire to signal wide as the ball passed him. The look on his face when seeing the ball clean his stumps up suggested that being bowled was the furthest thing from his mind - a look not too dissimilar to that on Gatting’s face after ‘that ball’ back in 1993.
The spin twins of Chave and Weiler finished the innings off for the Erratics, picking a wicket apiece up for their efforts.
Having finished Heads & Tails’ innings with a wicket, Fraser set about the bowling with a run-rate more in keeping with a Rutherford or a Cook; stylishly knocking several boundaries off in his 27. Able support was provided by Matt, then Krups who joined in with a few lusty blows and stylish flicks of his own - taking him to his thirty in comfortable fashion.
Jonathan came in during Krups’ innings and delivered another T20 batting masterclass, rotating the strike regularly and picking up a couple of boundaries himself along the way.
The work undertaken by the previous four batsmen set the scene for Daniel to come in and score the winning runs, via a beautiful leg side four and a delightful push into the off side.
Having enjoyed a tightly fought contest against friendly opposition, we made our way to the Beer Engine (at last - a game at Newton St Cyres that ends up there!) for excellent company, food and beer. A fitting end to a lovely evening of cricket.
