Match report Match Report: Philippa Davey

Firstly, as a new Erratic, an apology for the shortage of pictures. No amount of flowery prose will ever truly describe the stunning views from the Mount Edgcumbe pitch. Note to self – always bring camera. A beautifully sunny day with a view that included Kit Hill in Cornwall, Tors of Dartmoor, the Tamar estuary, Brunel’s Bridge and Plymouth Sound. The quote of the day from the supporters, who shall remain nameless, (I am a Plymouth maid!) probably sums up the view better than a camera, “It almost makes Plymouth look pretty”

Anyway, on to the cricket. Erratics won the toss and looked comfortable early on as the Mount Edgcumbe openers struggled to move the ball. Both Al Brunt and Tim Mileham seemed to be coping well with Deville’s bowling but a quick change of pace saw almost identical wickets fall. The dismissals might have been identical but the walks back to the pavilion were very different. Al returned with a wry smile and Tim returned with a torrent of expletives, a throw of the bat and an entertaining monologue about the wasted two hour drive.

Chris Ferro batted steadily and dismissed any loose balls for fours (14) and hit a superb six that cleared the trees. He was assisted by Guy Clarke (20 including three 4’s) and Duncan Chave 48 n.o (five 4’s and a 6) before finally going for 112. Matt Cook wrapped up the innings with Duncan and finished on 12 n.o, to give a respectable total of 243 for 8.

The fielding innings saw Triin Troon playing in Matt’s day old kit and he then promptly placed her right out on the boundary! Mount Edgcumbe began batting fairly steadily but Andy Ware looked to hit out at anything that was not on the stumps. It was James Burrows who got the breakthrough Erratics needed and he dispatched Matt Allatt for 22. Tim Mileham was unlucky not to get a wicket and his tidy bowling kept the run rate down. James continued to bowl consistently all afternoon and finished on 10 overs, 1 maiden, two wickets for 28 – excellent figures, when Andy Ware began to really hit out. Matt Cook had a good spell of 8 overs with 1 for 36 and Sam Cook 6 overs 1 for 30, provided some additional pace which Mount Edgecumbe found difficult to cope with. Duncan Chave bowled 4 very tight overs with 1 for 25 and Chris Ferro 2 overs, 2 wickets for 18 ensured the score was kept down to 219 for 7 – ensuring a draw. Andy Ware the star of their batting with 127 n.o.

Two excellent comedy moments in the field have to be reported though. James Burrows and Al Brunt both going for a dolly catch, no call from either, Al takes the catch and James cannons into his chest causing Al to drop the ball on James’s head – pure quality! (once we knew James was alright of course).

The second also involves Al and his record breaking over where every possible style of bowling was attempted (Editor - in the 21 deliveries that it took to complete the over). The batsman showed no respect and tried to pancake a ball up over his head only to be caught behind – the look on his face was priceless!
