Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 29 Jun 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report According to Wikipedia, Popples are an 1980’s American franchise, based around a collection of colourful teddy bears.

On a wet Thursday evening, a young Erratics squad faced a team whose name likely derives from the plush marsupial toys. It was a game against a good Newton Poppleford team for a second time in a month, after a resounding victory for the Popples in the last encounter, an easy 8 wicket victory.
Eager to repent for previous shortcomings, the Erratics had to erase the cuddly, fluffy connotations from their minds. These bears would show no mercy.

So in to bat we went, Chave and Crawford looking for some quick singles. Although damp, the wicket seemed to have some bounce in it, it wasn’t long before Crawford provided an easy catch for mid-off.
Having scrambled to the ready on Captain Wright’s orders, Walding was in, his usual boisterous self despite claims of ‘ill-health’ following a weekend at Glastonbury. Clubbing his way into the twenties, including a six and 3 fours, he seemed a sure bet to retire (at 25) before Chave, who was on 4. Not to be outdone, Chave starved Walding of the strike for 3 overs bar a single ball, and was clapped back to pavilion not out, shortly followed by his partner.

As the rain started to fall, Captain Wright hit a huge six into the pavilion, before falling for 10. Siva was unlucky to pop the ball back to the bowler, and Thistlethwaite was unfortunately run out by about 21 yards having claimed to run if he hit the ball but not moving when he did so. This led Chave to return to the scene, and plundered a few more before gallantly running himself out for the cause. The Erratics finished on 104, a good par score for the away team.

A quick turnaround saw the Popples head out to bat. Messrs Walding and Chave opened up against some big hitters. Striking the ball confidently, the home team used their ground well, hitting back past the bowlers, up the hill, as well as down the slope to the playpark next-door.

Walding removed an opener, and later George bowled a good spell, keeping the run rate down and claiming two wickets; staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat the Erratics took a couple of catches, including an awkward one for Wright, a bullet and below the knee but dealt with comfortably, however it wouldn’t stem the tide of Popple boundaries. With 2 retired and 3 wickets in all, the Popples chased down the score after 12 overs.

Ten of the team turned up to The Cannon, a good turnout, to reflect on a tough but enjoyable evening.
