Yarcombe & Stockland v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 18 Jun 2017 at 2.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report A sun-drenched weekend of cricket moved on from Dunsford to Yarcombe and Stockland (Y&S) – currently the only Erratics fixture within the Blackdown Hills, where the scene was set for Jonathan Kirby’s Big Birthday.

Birthday celebrations were met with early drama in the form of the toss. Skipper-for-the-day, Jeff Haynes, returned to proclaim that, having been asked whether we’d be batting or bowling, “some of us would be batting”. What we’d actually be doing was somehow lost, and it turned out that, after much confusion, we'd to take to the field under clear blue skies, and in temperatures in the high twenties.

Once the cricket began, Fraser Chave and Penny Price opened the bowling, offered little scope for Y&S to pick up easy runs, and Penny soon caught and bowled one of Y&S’s openers. With short boundaries in all directions, Jeff, Mark Hailwood, Duncan Chave and Chris Ferro continued to stifle easy runs; Mark H kept the pressure on Y&S with a sharp run-out; and Duncan with a couple of wickets, in particular a father-son Father’s Day combo, with Fraser forming a safe set of hands on the leg-side boundary. However, Y&S’s remaining opener, Mitch, often just launched the ball over our field, ultimately carrying his bat on 135, a significant contribution to Y&S’s 210 for 4.

After tea sufficient for at least four teams, Martin Wright and Tom Bennett-Hughes took to the crease for the Erratics, but Tom soon returned after a bottom edge carried through to Y&S’s wicketkeeper. Martin and Ben Youngman tried to keep pace with the 5.275-an-over required run rate, adding 87 before Martin (caught on 53) and Ben (bowled on 31) made way for Chris Ferro and the birthday boy, Jonathan, whose innings Gabrielle had arrived just in time to watch. Chris ensured Jonathan got a good birthday work-out, with a succession of quick-run singles (many directed to the on-loan Mark H), while Jonathan favoured the leg-side boundary. The pair soon brought the 211 target within reach, and after Jonathan’s wicket fell for 41, Mark Phillips (7) and Chris Ferro (67) amassed the winning runs, which included Mark P’s drive-of-the-day back over the bowler.

Birthday celebrations resumed at the Tucker’s Arms in Dalwood, a quintessential Devon pub owing to its thatched roof and beer-garden generator disguised as a laurel bush. Jonathan indulged in various drink-based gifts and what energy the sun and cricket had sapped was soon replenished by the cricket-themed, Cadbury les fingeres lined, chocolate cake Gabrielle had crafted. All in all, not a bad way to reach 60, not out.
