Scorecard

Clyst St George v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 20 May 2018 at 2.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report In recent years the first Clyst game of the year has settled into calming, relaxing groove of draws (some people would call them losing draws but I prefer the more positive style of thought). In fact if you look up the first game from 2016 you will find a scorecard that closely resembles the one you can see below. There has been two major differences however: firstly that we did better with the bat, secondly so did they (alternatively we did worse with the ball and so did they but again we’re trying to think positively), these two differences will be discussed in a moment but firstly I would like to remember a moment from the match: Tea was provided by Chris Ferro and whilst we were collecting our food he bought out a plate of peeled and chopped banana, one of which was slightly brown. I pointed this out to Martin Weiler, saying something along the lines of “that banana is slightly brown” to which Martin replied “Ooo yes, don’t you like them like that?” Anyway, on with the game.

The second difference: I think the most easy thing to spot from Clyst’s innings is that we didn’t take any wickets (this leaves us in the situation of having played two afternoon matches having taken 2 wickets). Whose fault was this? A tough question. And probably not the one you should be asking, after all “there is no shortage of fault to be found amid our stars.” Did we bowl well? This is a better question, but it still it requires a better understanding of what you’re comparing us to. For example if you compare us to a troupe of sunflowers then I expect we bowled better (at least we had the ability to walk). So perhaps the best question to ask would be did we bowl better than normal? Well no, we didn’t take any wickets.

In 2017 Ben Pullan and Freddie Creer opened the batting for Clyst, both got about 80 before getting out and Clyst continued to get 273. This year Ben Pullan and Freddie Creer opened the batting for Clyst, bot got over 100 before retiring and Clyst continued to get 254. According to this it is easy to predict that next year Ben Pullan and Freddie Creer will open the batting for Clyst, both will get 120 not out leaving the team total as 235. Admittedly this might not pe possible.

The first difference: when did we start batting for the draw? I don’t think that we ever started batting for the draw. Notice that everyone out was caught. There was a general feeling that we weren’t going to win, there was also a general feeling that we weren’t going to lose. The draw felt inevitable. It’s worth pointing out that we haven’t actually lost to Clyst since the 27th of May 2012, in the cases that we can’t win, we draw and if we can win, we do.
