"I don't like defensive shots—you can only get threes" - WG Grace

Cricket is a game of mystery, curiosity, eccentricity and humour. Even Lord’s cricket ground has a slope. In order to further appeal to cricket’s sense of the eccentric and comic, we played on a wicket ‘scored’ by a weeping line of diesel left by the mower. It was also difficult to score boundaries particularly on one side of the wicket, hence W.G. Grace’s displeasure with 3’s, Jonathan and Duncan can provide the next line! Boundaries were generally at a premium, again Jonathan and Duncan and Jack (with a six, courtesy of four overthrows) are best placed to discuss this. Our score of 168 was thanks to a majestic 63 from Jonathan, indeed it was a surprise when he was out even after continually running 3’s. Duncan’s 30 provided for me the champagne moment when Snell took a comfortable catch, which surprised everyone including himself. Jack’s 23 included a number of powerful boundaries, he is going to develop into quite a cricketer, particularly if we can get him to bowl with the ‘arm’ he possesses! Fraser’s 16 also included two wickets (2-32) with catches by Jonathan, try keeping him out of the game. Our leading wicket taker (see below) was Jim with 3-23, Chris as ever bowled us into the game with 2 – 15, supported by the author 1 -15 and Duncan 0-11, who had to come off carrying a shoulder injury, Matt 1-34, John Curtis 0-13, bowling at the death when South Brent were trying to get the total. Andrew as ever kept consistently well on a difficult wicket – ask Chris about the eccentric bounce.

One aspect of cricket that makes it different from most team sports is its focus on interrogative repetition, and variations thereon. The bowler rarely bowls the unplayable delivery but, instead, will usually seek to unsettle, deceive or intimidate a batsman, so that he makes an error in his choice of stroke, leading to his losing his wicket. A ball is bowled, then another, maybe with a slight variation, then another, being possibly similar to the first and so on. Jim/Robert Redford/Paul Newman/ Glen Maxwell suggested that after my comment about how Jimmy Anderson has a breakdown of how he has taken his wickets Jim or his aliases would need another column for the full toss, his retort was it would be the only one.

We won, it’s good to win particularly after playing against a team who were generous and very friendly, even lending us Matt after playing as a goalkeeper just before the game. We finished the game in the Pack Horse Inn with our hosts. The conversation slipped into discussions about Fred Truman (thankyou John) "I hear Henry the 8th used to shove the ol' hap'neys about a bit when he weren't bashing missus!" and The Indoor League, example here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh7xOE8Rl6c], perhaps the Erratics should start wearing cardigans? Another Fred quote ‘I’d have looked even faster in colour’. Even though it was a grey day the rain held off until we were leaving the pub.
