Lympstone v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 30 May 2019 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 27 runs
Match report
The question posed was this: "had we taken so long to bowl our 20 overs because we had spent so much time retrieving the ball from the outer reaches of the Withycombe ground, or was it because skipper Martin Wright had been channelling his inner Claudio Ranieri?" When given the right to reply to this suggestion that he had been tinkering constantly with the field, Martin commented on the "tendency of Erratics fielding towards entropy and the need to intervene with maximum prejudice."
You now know enough to guess the rest of this report. The thoroughly genial Lympstone XI batted first and generally smote our bowling everywhere the fielders weren't - wherever they were placed. We were not without our occasional successes, and Rithvik and Chris Ferro kept things under control for the final four overs, but a total of 162 presented a challenging chase.
Undaunted, Duncan and "BP" (one of three Bens in the team) dashed away at 11 runs an over. In no time at all, we were 40 something without loss. But then Duncan and Martin Wright were both bowled within the space of four balls. And when, very soon afterwards, off consecutive deliveries, Chris and Ben Jackson were both dismissed in identical, improbable fashion , (caught one-handed by the 'keeper after gloving down the leg side), the target seemed impossible rather than improbable.
Nevertheless, the runs kept coming, leaving us only in need of "a couple of really big overs" to be genuine contenders. But somehow we kept finding the fielders, in a way that they had not.
Back in the hutch, having retired not out, BP was champing at the bit, while Gabrielle was practising her attacking shots. But neither were called upon while Mark Hailwood and Ben Youngman provided a late batting flourish. And in the gathering gloom, we ran out of time - or rather, we ran out of overs.
Food in the Swan Inn in Lympstone was excellent - chilli and rice seems to be in vogue at the moment - and the company was convivial. It was a good way to end the day.
