Newton St Cyres (mini-league) v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Tue 18 Jun 2019 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 70 runs

Match report What to do on a gloomy June evening on a day in which it had been raining off and on all day, city pavements shining wet and presumably soggy ground to match? Well, why not play in a cricket match?

And so, with no message of cancellation from our League of Friends hosts out at Cheriton Fitzpaine, eleven erratics set off bemusedly for their next match in this popular Tuesday evening competition. We had already forfeited one match this season as a result of the weather and hoped that there would not be a repetition. On arrival at the ground we found CF’s Chairman and Groundsman, the ever optimistic Mike Foan, prpepared to let the game go ahaed. His only reservation, but generously given, being “It’ll wreck the wicket and I’ll just have to prepare another one for Saturday.”

Our opponents, Newton St. Cyres, had only 10 players initially. During the match this number rose to 11, then reduced again to 10 as one player succumbed to knee trouble. We lost the toss and were put in to bat. Our captain Nigel said he would have elected to bat first anyway if he had been given the choice. And things certainly went well from then on. Young openers Fraser and Connor seemed unaffected by the damp conditions, both playing stylish strokes sending the ball over the boundary in all parts of the field. They were followed by Ben Pullan and Krupakar, who continued the unerring strokeplay before both reaching the retirement score of 30 without apparent difficulty. In came Chris, who then played out the rest of the innings. There was a brief hiatus in the run fest as your reporter gave the opposition one of their few wickets, through his own extreme negligence, pulling his first ball to leg unaware of a waiting fielder at short square. This suicidal behaviour can be seen in a positive light, however, bringing, as it did, Dominic to the crease, who lost no time in scoring 17 from about five deliveries. 147 on the board looked like a pretty good total.

And so to the innings of Newton St. Cyres, with the weather still feeling dampish but perhaps a wicket getting a bit drier. Their innings seemed to get off to a strong start with a good run rate per over. But then wickets began to fall fairly regularly, with especially good bowling spells from Mark Hailwood and Matt Crawford beginning to contain and limit the opposition. The finishing touches were provided by Fraser Chave, Nigel Rutherford and Ben Pullan bringing Newton’s innings to a close on 77 for 9 wickets.

Erratics were relieved to get this clear cut win in the bag on an evening when we could have easily had to miss the game altogether because of the weather. Thank again go to Cheriton Fitzpaine for allowing the fixture to run.
