Tale Millers v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 10 Jul 2019 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 20 Runs

Match report The pre-game ritual of 'the toss' could be considered one of the critical points in the match.

George Greaves, in his first captaining stint for the Erratics, elected to bat. The choice was in fact made the day previous- "Whatever the condition, we'll bat", as George explained he would be slightly late the following day, his temporary vice captain Hailwood was instructed, if he won the toss. Although not told which individuals would bat, the instruction was plain and simple.

Captain Greaves did in fact arrive in time for the toss, which he won.

"We'll have a bowl"...

So the Erratics took to the field, where both teams made a steady start. Youngman and Johnson-Goodier probing unsuccessfully, and the Millers accumulating slowly. After playing themselves in, one opener executed some punchy strokes for 4, until retirement, whilst the other continued to play himself in - until first change Hailwood removed him lbw for 9, in the 12th over. Luckily for the Tale Millers, number 3 had come and gone, another retiree, in the midst of a mini collapse. Another wicket for Hailwood, with the catch and then a run out from Johnson-Goodier, frankly showing off in the field.

At 14 overs gone, John Curtis came on for a spell - the Prada of bowling - expensive but successful. He was particularly thankful to the two catchers who didn't spill near the boundary rope, but thanks should go also to Captain Greaves, with some good field placements.

By hook or by crook, the Tale Millers made their way up to 122 - a good score on a green wicket? Perhaps.

The opposition warmed up to their fielding stint with a rugby ball, in contrast to our earlier stretch with the aerobie, which seems to have become the go-to warm up routine for the Erratics. It remains to be seen if the England team will update their football routine to follow suit.

A pair of Martins started the chase, on what had turned into a difficult surface to score runs, especially with the fielders spread around the boundary.

Once one Martin (Weiler) succumbed, placing the ball high in sky quickly followed by a fielders hands, the next few Erratics offered little resistance. Chave, Crawford and Krups came and went without much commotion. At 25-4 after 9 overs, the game looked lost. Enter Messrs Ferro and Johnson-Goodier. CJG must have wondered what all the fuss had been about, smashing his first three balls for 6, 6, 4, blasting the ball over the fence. After retiring after only a dozen or so balls, he remarked "Just close your eyes and swing really hard". Unconfirmed reports suggest Ferro took a different approach, but still retired ably with a thirty of his own, the pair rescuing us to a more respectable 80-5 from 15 overs.

So with 42 required, Greaves, Youngman, Hailwood and Curtis added 14 singles, but by the time the retirees came back to work, it was too late.

It seemed Hailwood's recent match report request of fewer victories has started to filter through, but it didn't take the shine off of a great evening in the sun, the Tale Millers putting on a BBQ and drinks from the bar.

Looking back at the last time we played here, in 2017, we batted first, on what was described as 'a green and indiscernible wicket'. And lost. You're off the hook George!
