Humbled? Humiliated? Horrendous? (And that’s just the H’s)

Yes, the Erratics have matched the batting of England against New Zealand. On a grey evening for long sleeves and long johns, I was at least looking forward to seeing some old friends from my years in the 2000’s when I played for Spreyton before being tempted by the fleshpots of the big city of Exeter.

Friends no more - as I was part of the procession of low scores that created a platform of 13 for 6 before some respectability was produced by Krups, Fraser and Lee. To be fair the pitch was awful - according to my contacts in Spreyton it was under water a week before - it had then seemed to grow an inch of moss. Bounce was there none.

But you have to see what it was like for both teams and whilst at least 2 of their batsmen were fooled by a moss roller onto their stumps the result was never in doubt.

On a bright note - the spread of food in the beer garden at the famous Old Tom Cobbley Inn - of Widdecombe fair fame - was gargantuan (see pic below). And the sun came out . And I (just about) forgave my old mate Chris for bowling me with a non spinning off break that just reached the base of the stumps.

Ed - Nigel was feeling similarly despondent after our second heavy defeat of the season at Spreyton, and composed the following in the outfield:

He might have felt differently if he'd come to the pub...
