Chulmleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 29 May 2021 at 1.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 94 Runs

Match report Matt Crawford reports:

After a 3 week cricketing hiatus, pausing for Devon's brief but tedious monsoon season, finally a weekend of cricket!

Bright sunshine, blue sky and great expectations for the new club president with a chance to prove his worth, Martin Weiler took Skipper duties for the first time in his new position.

A toss lost, but an opportunity to set an intimidating target gained, we saw Mark and Siva of to a confident start, 24 from the first 4 overs. Despite the early flourish, batting was hard; deserving shots not being rewarded with boundaries as the long grass slowed the ball to within a couple of metres to the rope each time. Often pace off, and fielders in the right places, the Erratics were made to work hard for their runs, but work hard they did. An excellent start made it to 40 without loss.

Local paparazzi had spotted Hailwood at a kebab van the day previous but he played fluently in front of the Chumleigh crowds. After Siva was caught, Mark continued to play solidly in the spotlight, offering few chances by playing along the floor and patiently accumulating.

Tim top scored with 44, before succumbing to injury and a not quite pulled hamstring, later retorting that if he knew he was one stroke from a half century he would have gone for the big hit. Crawford and Kirby didn't much contribute, but a late flourish from Rutherford and Weiler saw us above the 150 that most thought would be a competitive score. 161 required.

Most brought sandwiches but at least one participant came unprepared for BYO tea, a banana and a huge bar of dark chocolate, which had melted in the sun.

Ben and John opened the bowling, the former with a probing line and length, the latter offering tempting deliveries, one too good to be true for an opening batsmen, John collecting a satisfying wicket after turning the batsmen onto his backside. Emdad gave little away, removing batsmen 3 and 6.

Nigel bowled next, after an over from his doppelgänger, collecting 3 for none. This performance was the bee's knees - shoutout to the Bees (Brentford FC) for today's promotion to the Premier League, and also to the knees (Nigel's) for allowing just enough flexibility to take two sharp catches at close range, in addition to his frankly ridiculous bowling figures.

With the run chase looking less likely, Chumleigh turned to defence to salvage a draw, but it wasn't to be. A man short, the batting side asked if their youngster could return to the crease, but he didn't fancy it and after a big swing and a miss he remarked that he'd rather be at home. Luckily for him the stay didn't last long and he got his wish, the game came to a close with a convincing win for the Erratics.

A trip to The Old Court House followed where Martin celebrated his double success of leading his team to victory as well as the promotion of one of his many football teams. It was great to be back in the pub (and playing cricket).
