Match report By Lee Grant...

For most players, this game signalled one of the furthest away games, baring tour matches, with the ground located in north Taunton. For this match reporter though, this was basically on his doorstep compared to other games across the season! Apon arrival, pretty much everyone spoke how gorgeous the ground looks compared to some other places we visit with a Picturesque background.

Fraser won the toss and decided we shall have a bat first with Martin and Duncan opening up. A slow, lets say cautious start saw us 22/1 from the first 10 overs, with only Duncan back in the pavilion have misjudged a full ball and went down the wicket only to miss, leaving the keeper with an easy stumping. Martin soon joined him after the first 10 overs playing an uncharacteristcally hoik and holed out on the boundary. That then brought Ben Yarde-Buller and Kyle Wedgwood to the crease together, who played some lovely shots all round the wicket, with a couple of lovely straight drives until Kyle was bowled, bringing Jonathan Kirby to the wicket just before the drinks break. Unfortunately for Jonathan, the drinks break does what it usually does and brought a wicket, his to be exact. I came and went quickly, and after losing Ben then a Rithvik quick fire 19 saw Fraser and Anuj together at the crease, with Ben Youngman and John Curtis concerned they may have to actually bat. But there concerns were soon eased with some of the must destructive batting I’ve seen in some time, with Anuj scoring 72 off 49 balls, and only run out off the final fall, with Fraser 34 off 29 playing the support role. Fraser said that when Anuj got to 30, he would stop blocking and just go after it, and go after it he did. We finished on 234/8 which looked a very good score.

Then, it was lunch. A beautiful spread put on by the Wombats with plenty of sandwiches, crisps and fruit put on, which almost all of us knew what each one was! Only Anuj to say he didn’t know what a blueberry was and tried his first during said lunch break.

With that lunch still fresh, we took to the field and opened with the ever reliable Ben Youngman and Rithvik, with both testing the opening batsmen, and Rithvik drawing an edge only for it to burst through Frasers hands at second slip such the pace Rithvik was finding. Once Fraser then put another down in the slips, Fraser clinged onto one and Ben had the breakthrough. Fraser then brought John Curtis on, who in his own words, said it was done to ‘spice up the run chase!’ If that was the case, it backfired as John picked up a wicket with his first/second ball! Then repeated the trick in his next over in almost the same fashion.

This is where it turned surreal for a bit. Kyle went to turn to stop the ball going for 4 off John and let out a constant scream, as everyone rushed over. Ben Youngman and Fraser deciding it was a trip to A&E straight away so Fraser went to aid Kyle, who was now sat upright but still on the floor, which Ben got changed. Ben reversed his car down to the boundary where Kyle was, which several players from both sides checked in on Kyle. After a 15-20 minute delay, Kyle was able to get up on his feet and managed with help to hobble back to the pavilion to rest it, and no trip to A7E required.

Whilst Ben went and got changed, again, we were kindly given by the Wombats 2 sub fielders and Fraser had brought Duncan on to bowl, taking a smart caught and bowled chance. Few other changes of bowling then Fraser brought Rithvik and Ben back on to close out their spells, with Rithvik picking up a second deserved wicket. Myself and Anuj then followed them with some tight bowling and once victory was all but assured when Duncan, back in replace of Anuj, cleaned bowled one and myself cleaned bowled another 2, it just left their number 10 and 11, 13 and 14 year old boys, as the final pairing. To say me and Duncan didn’t want to be the one to get either out was an understatement, in a lose-lose situation for us both as they saw out the last 2-3 overs, with one playing a gorgeous shot off the last ball of the match to find the boundary.

This match report could have gone on for much longer, such was the extent of everything that happened that day. But a good day was had by all, and the Erratics, who finally played the Wombats after several attempts and being thwarted by rain, came out on top!
