Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 22 May 2022 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 18 Runs
Match report
“I’ve got sunscreen in my eye, I’ve always got sunscreen in my eyes” exclaimed the skipper Matt after losing the toss and being asked to bat first. Sivaraman Subramanian and Martin Wright took to the field to open the batting on a bright sunny day (there haven’t been that many since I moved to England). Erratics got off to a flier with Siva smashing two boundaries in the first over. Newton Poppleford did get a wicket as Martin Wright looked to clear the fielders in the circle with a cover drive but fell to a bliding Kapil Dev-esqe catch by Thomas running backwards in the sun which easily could’ve slipped out on any other day and Martin Wright’s pre match statement of “I never get any runs against Newton poppleford” had come true once again. Tom Bennett-Hughes came in to replace Martin but could’t get off the mark and was bowled by Thomas who was having quite the day in the field. Chris Ferro walked in to replace Tom and steadied the rocking ship. Siva and Chris blocked the good balls and punished anything even slightly off the mark with boundaries and smart running between the wickets.Among all the calmness on the field, the attention of the people sitting in the dugout was caught by a peculiar object that Harry had just taken out of his kit. A massage gun was suddenly the talk of the hour as everyone tried it on and Harry explained that it was a christmas gift and that he only ever tried the “lowest” setting. Siva got to his 50 as we approached drinks. However, just after the drinks, Siva got out LBW just as he had described he would in the drinks break (this is the second time someone’s prophecy had come true within a span of 2 hours). Nigel came on to replace Siva and scored 18 with a six straight over the bowler’s head before being caught by Cox. It feels so good to watch Chris bat because there’s never any hint of panic or of not being in control.Newton Poppleford had no answer to his arsenal of drives, sweeps and quick feet between the wickets. Just as against Stokeinteignhead, Chris rather let the opposition get him out as he put a full-toss ball straight into the hands of the fielder at mid-on after contributing 63 to the Erratics total. Harry came out with all guns blazing, sending the ball flying all over the place. Somerset’s misfortune of being bowled out on Saturday turned out to be a blessing for the Erratics as they witnessed a quickfire 38-ball 54 from Harry who wouldn’t have played this game if Somerset had managed to bat until Sunday.Finishing at 237/6 after 40 overs, Erratics felt more than satisfied with the batting effort as they put on a 200+ score in both matches over the weekend. Some of us were jokingly disappointed as the total went past Saturday's 234 claiming that we would’ve set a record of scoring the same runs on two consecutive matches (well that’s for Fraser to check in his book of stats, I make no such claims).
I opened the bowling with Matt coming in from the other end. Newton Poppleford lost a wicket in the second over as Matt tossed a ball from a good 3-4 yards behind the bowling crease and A Chesun could only find the hands of Fraser at mid-on.If not for the quick hands of our wicket keeper Andrew Forrester, who chose to stand up to the stumps for my “medium pace”, I am sure I would’ve conceded over 50 runs in my quota of 8 overs. T Cox came in to bat and he meant business from the start. Newton Poppleford were going at more than 6 runs an over until Fraser and Harry came in as first and second changes. Fraser bowled Perram out first ball. This was his 3rd wicket in 4 balls he had bowled to left handers this season until then. His accuracy along with the occasional variation in the speed and a good off-stump line slowed Newton Poppleford down. T Cox however continued on to get to 53 before Fraser got him LBW (much to his annoyance as he claimed the ball had pitched outside leg when I could clearly see from short leg that it was going on to hit the middle, well judged umps!). C Gaywood held one end firmly as wickets kept falling from the other. Harry did have a bit of a chat with M Raistrick claiming that he always top-edges the ball and the very next ball was then “top-edged” for a six over Harry’s head, much to our amusement. But Harry did have the last say in the matter as he bowled Rainstick. Harry took 3 wickets and ran R Pugsley out. C Gaywood however, kept scoring with the occasional boundary as we edged towards a close finish. The skipper himself came into the attack when Newton Poppleford needed 25 to win in 3 overs.Matt got S Hartland out LBW and then bowled L Dalton to bring E Thomas to the crease. The ball hit the pads a couple of times and everyone was puzzled as I chose to not go up for an appeal from deep mid-wicket, perhaps, because I was jealous that I had not gotten any wickets yet again or because I didn’t get to bat or because I couldn't tell if a particular house on the road was new or old (they look exactly the same to me!).All jokes aside,Newton Poppleford gave it their all as we neared the last over. For all his effort and excellent batting, Gaywood couldn’t get his team across the line and remained unbeaten on 82, Erratics winning by 18 runs.
The teams shook hands and headed off for a pint at the historical Canon Inn (which had not had any cannons since the civil war according to Martin Wright and Chris Ferro) as another fine afternoon of traditional village cricket came to an end.
