Spreyton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 01 Jun 2022 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 18 Runs
Match report
Spreyton, the crusher of dreams, the bringer of misery.
Also the destination of Wednesday’s game following an intriguing discussion on the St Thomas bus regarding toilet waste removal on trains. Our passengers were surprised to learn that like India, the UK’s trains also disposed of waste directly onto the tracks, up until 2019.
The Erratics’ previous 3 games against Spreyton had been played in good spirits but with little to no success. The most recent episode in the series took place in May, with a less harrowing loss by only 15 runs, compared to a 69-run demolition and a 5-wicket mauling last year.
The takeaway from this previous game was that we couldn’t afford to drop 8 opportunities in the field. As the old cricketing adage goes “catches result in victories”. And today they did – with 5 catches taken, and no real opportunities drop during the game- just one refusal.
But back to the match itself- Captain Fraser lost the toss, and the Erratics were sent in to bat. An excellent opening stand of 44 between Lindsay and Ferro set the tempo for the evening, at a run a ball. The boundaries were flowing, but once Siva entered the middle they were positively gushing, including a sumptuous drive through the covers for four. He quickly retired from just 13 balls, before a newly promoted Tiwari was trapped lbw to an unexpected faster ball.
Another partnership north of 40 formed between Krups and Chave, with Chave overtaking before his demise on the final ball of the 19th over. The very next ball, a crisp four sent Krups to his retirement, the third from a transformed Erractics side. A six over deep midwicket from Crawford off the last ball of the innings brought up the score of 138-5. The highest score the Erratics had achieved in 4 attempts, but would it be enough?
Yes. But it wasn’t as simple as that. With the power hitting of Spreyton’s Ben, the home side were in contention right up until the final ball.
Captain Chave and Tiwari got us started with a couple of tight overs, before our opposition started tucking into some leg side full tosses from Crawford. Tiwari finished his spell with an excellent 3-14, his adjusted shorter run up for this game proving fruitful, letting the pitch do the talking with not a lot lost in pace.
Hailwood and Ferro had work to do at the back end of Spreyton’s innings, after 76 runs from the first 12 overs, which was ahead of the Erratic’s 72 at the same stage. Both bowled nicely capturing crucial wickets, including a smart stumping from Forrester, however this allowed the explosive Ben to return to the middle.
After a pair of big sixes, Ben was left stranded not out with 39 with his partner caught with 11 balls remaining, finally a win at Spreyton. The curse broken, much to the Erratic’s delight.
After the game, we all shared the delights of the food provided next to the pavilion, including some excellent banana bread, the recipe for which was shared with Siva and we look forward to trying his attempt in the upcoming tour.
