Match report Erratics vs Sunsets Friday July 15th

It was glorious weather at our home ground in the Teign valley. All of our opponents this year have expressed real enthusiasm to play us there - they may be fed up with producing teas though I think the setting is special by most peoples standards.

Before the start Fraser welcomed Dominic back for his 100th appearance in erratics colours - he now holds the record for longevity. @5 years to arrive at this milestone. He may be slow to reach this figure but with bat or ball in hand things can happen rapidly.

The as he and I did first stint as umpires he wanted a crash course in the rules he might need to know about. Fraser helped out as well since my knowledge does not include recent amendments eg the incoming batsman will be facing even if the batters have crossed(To be introduced fun the autumn??). Most of Dom’s umpiring went smoothly apart from forgetting that his signals were for the benefit of the scorer as much as the players.

Fraser and Martin got the innings off to a smooth start - Fraser stroking the ball effortlessly and too soon passing the retirement age of 30. Martin cutting well and finding gaps in the field - memorably lobbing a ball just over the head of silly mid off. Bernie introduction signalled a slowing of the run rate that had been comfortably 6 an over. His figures 1 for 7 off 3 overs shows he can still bamboozle us. Whilst the rest of the erratics made heavier weather as the innings went on, Anuj who is on a whistle stop tour all the fixtures dropped in to hit another classy wrist 30.

We made it to 121 not being sure if this was par or not.

The sunsets innings followed a similar arc to ours , relatively comfortable to start then slowing up as our bowling and the vagaries of the wicket eroded their confidence. To start Rithvik and anuj our Indian speedsters challenged the bat and sometimes the wicketkeeper. It is a fast out field
and because of the pace edges could go to the boundary. Anuj got a reward in the form of an
LBW - a dismissal that his action is ideally suited to and later a bowled - it sounds easy but in
practice bowling at pace on the stumps is not.

The wiles of John, Fraser and Matt then changed the pace and character of the innings . The runs dried up and wickets fell regularly - again bowling at the stumps seemed to be devilishly successful as a ploy . Of the 10 wickets to fall, 1 was run out,3 caught the other 6 either bowled or LBW. I think all decisions were fair though it may have helped that their Aussie umpire for the last 10 overs was extravagantly merry on tins of who knows what. Matt had a particularly good spell of bowling and as always supplemented this with his value in the field. In the end it was a comfortable win.

A last word on Dominic - he has a way to go to his batting and bowling milestones - a not out 1and a typically erratic 3 overs of bowling - I always find keeping to Dom entertaining as since he doesn’t know what is going to come out of his hand no-one else on the field does.

And to complete this evening - we got to the pub after 9 - but in this unenglish July it was delicious to sit outside the pub in the sunshine - may we continue to enjoy our own ground.
