Match report
John Curtis reports...
“Whisper it when”.
Mistaken for homework, your reporter’s notes were unfortunately lost the day before the match, eaten as was required (although prematurely), by an archetypical dog.
In the absence of the traditional aides-memoires, your reporter will therefore be relying on his medium-term memory in order to render this account.
This is unlikely to be a good thing from the point of view either of historical accuracy or of journalistic balance.
Nevermind.
The encounter with the highly affable Morebath CC side, (who assured us that they were the original MCC and were consequently considering instructing their lawyers in a small matter of ‘passing off’ which had come to their attention), was a spirited affair, keenly contested, and one which resulted in that most mundane of outcomes, a losing draw, sometimes referred to in the harsh technical light shed by usual specifications of the 20 over format, as a loss.
From an Erratic perspective Ben Yarde Buller gave a stand-out all-round performance with his 30+ not out being later perfectly complimented by a rolling and spitting Four-for bowling spell of the leg-break persuasion. This latter was an intervention at first-change which signaled an apparent halt to the MCCs opening charge which, after just 4 overs and with the total around 60, had looked sure to overhaul what had initially been confidently regarded as a robust Erratics total of 152, with both Siva and Fraser also having retired with maximum permissible 30s.
For the next 12 overs however, the game’s weave was tightened as the MCC did all that was necessary, (a desultory working of the gaps in the field for singles, interspersed with the occasional rifled four), to keep up with the required rate.
And then came the stellar eclipse, a perfect moment to absolve a reporter from any footling duties owed to accuracy or balance.
Towards the end of the MCC’s innings, in or around the 16th over, just as the batsmen seemed to be reaffirming their faith in their coming victory, Siva ran down a hard-cut, had-to-be-a-four at the boundary’s edge, perfectly square of the wicket. As the admiring hails of “great stop” and “well done Siva” were still mustering in fielder’s throats, he spun and whipped the ball to arc, like fate itself, to the single wicket showing, shattering the stumps and seizing the moment in a perfect stellar alignment.
For a second, the world was quiet.
He had been over the horizon, fielding at deep square, deep down in the mid-Devon Bayou, outside signal. There was nothing sensible to say.
Then Siva came laughing and running back up the rise past his clubhouse-bound victim to a now exulting team on that perfected Friday evening.
The thread played out to the result, which appeared, as in retrospect everything always does, inevitable.
On the hottest weekend of the year thus far, we were to lose the next two NDT fixtures to rain.
But, whisper it when, there would always be Siva’s run-out.
