South Brent v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 07 May 2023 at 1.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 27 Runs
Match report
This away game at South Brent marked my 50th appearance for The Erratics and as the statistician himself confirmed, I became the fastest player (Probably?) to reach this milestone.
The following description of the match report has been written by ChatGPT upon using the Match Scorecard as input:
Match Report: Erratics vs South Brent
Erratics Cricket Club took on South Brent in an exciting cricket match held on May 7, 2023. It was a 40-over contest, and Erratics batted first to set a target for South Brent.
Erratics Innings:
Duncan Chave and Jon Perkin opened the batting for Erratics but couldn't make substantial contributions. Chave scored 18 runs from 49 balls before being caught by Bryant, while Perkin managed only 2 runs off 19 deliveries. Andrew Forrester steadied the innings with a patient knock of 30 runs from 77 balls, including a solitary boundary.
Anuj Tiwari showcased some aggressive stroke play, hitting 19 runs off just 15 balls, which included three fours and a six, at an impressive strike rate of 126.67. However, wickets kept falling at the other end, with Hugh Sheridan, Roger Putman, Fraser Chave, and Oscar Cammack departing cheaply.
Chris Saunders played a crucial unbeaten innings of 13 runs off 18 balls to bolster the total, and he was well supported by Paul Carr, who remained not out on 4 runs from 16 deliveries. The extras column contributed significantly to Erratics' total, with 12 additional runs being added, including 1 no-ball, 9 wides, and 2 byes. Erratics finished their innings at 104 runs for the loss of 8 wickets after 40 overs.
South Brent Bowling:
South Brent's bowlers displayed a disciplined effort to restrict Erratics to a modest total. C. O'Hare was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4 wickets for 17 runs in his 8 overs, at an excellent average of 4.25 and an economy rate of 2.13. J. Lougalin-Fitzpatrick and N. Bryant chipped in with a wicket each, while A. Cook and C. Roud also managed to take one wicket apiece. Overall, South Brent's bowling attack applied pressure and bowled economically to restrict the opposition.
South Brent Innings:
Chasing a target of 105 runs for victory, South Brent struggled right from the start. None of their batsmen could make significant contributions, as wickets fell at regular intervals. C. Roud top-scored with 28 runs from 28 deliveries, including 4 fours.
Chris Saunders led the bowling attack for Erratics with an impressive spell of 3 overs, taking 3 wickets for just 4 runs, at an average of 1.33 and an economy rate of 1.33. Anuj Tiwari, Phil Power, and Oscar Cammack also contributed with a wicket each. Fraser Chave was the most economical bowler, conceding only 18 runs in his 6 overs while picking up 2 wickets.
South Brent was bowled out for just 77 runs in 30.1 overs, falling short of the target by 27 runs. Erratics' bowlers displayed excellent control and took wickets at regular intervals, putting constant pressure on the South Brent batsmen.
Summary:
Erratics Cricket Club emerged victorious in a low-scoring encounter against South Brent. Erratics set a target of 105 runs, with Andrew Forrester and Anuj Tiwari being the main contributors. South Brent's batting lineup struggled to get going, succumbing to the disciplined bowling from Erratics. Chris Saunders and Fraser Chave were the standout performers with the ball for Erratics, securing a comfortable win by a margin of 27 runs.
The following information is what ChatGPT could not tell you:
As we arrived at the village ground, the wicket looked bright brown in colour but upon closer inspection, things turned out to be entirely different. I could actually compare it to the 6-yard box of a football pitch in the 90s after a rough football game – soft, muddy, marshy and grim.
The Erratics batted first and the innings began slow. The skipper himself said “ A score of 3 here is equivalent to a 10” and that “120 should be defendable”.
Andrew Forrester went in to bat at Number 3 after Jon Perkin was caught trying to hit one over extra cover. Andrew demonstrated patience, waiting for the ball to come on to his bat before deciding to block it or push it over the infield for runs. Aided by some dropped catches and on-field generosity, Erratics made their way to a 104 in 40 overs.
After and amazing tea and the skipper foiling all my attempts to convince him to let me bowl left-handed, South Brent began their innings. Chris Sounders looked lethal right from the start and made quick work of the top order getting 3 wickets in as many overs with his well-directed leg-cutters. I was lucky enough to get a wicket myself thanks to one of the few catches we held on to (Thanks Oscar!). And when I say few, I mean 3 out 10 attempts in total and yours truly being the guilty party of dropping two absolute dollies (Sorry Skip! Need to practice catching before the next game starts).
The opposition had a decent batting line-up but had failed to learn from the first innings and lost wickets at regular intervals. Phil Power got the last wicket of the game and I have never seen a bowler look more apologetic after dismissing someone, the batsman here being 11-year-old Jadon Sibley. Everyone shook hands and made their way to the Conservative Club for a pint.
As of now for the 2023 season, cricket got one back and the score now stands at:
