Match report
ERRATICS GET OFF TO WINNING START
And so, after three postponements, the 2024 season finally got started at Newton St Cyres Recreation Ground. It’s a field that has hosted many Clubs over the years. In the 1970s it was home to Whitestone and in the 1980s we played Newton St Cyres there. These days a myriad of teams use the now artificial pitch, including Crediton Inn, Bakers, Met Office and tonight’s opponents Heads and Tails.
You’d think that playing Heads and Tails the toss would involve a coin. Not so. Erratics skipper Lee Grant reported that he had to choose which hand the dandelion was in! Lee is a master at that and chose to bat first.
Thankfully most of the team had made it despite horrendous traffic jams around the approach roads from Exeter. There were a few smug Eco Erratics however, as Chris Ferro, Duncan and Fraser Chave had all arrived by train.
It was good to welcome debutant Daniel Lobb who had developed his cricket in Clyst St George’s highly regarded youth set up. Daniel had been pointed our way by Krupakar. Their daughters share a nursery and Dad chat quickly turned to cricket. Well recruited Krups!
Keep going Daniel and we may have a new newcomer of the year to award. 2023 winner, Sophia, was there with Lee and Thelma just to keep an eye on the competition.
Optimistically given the dimming light a 20 over match was agreed although overs were shortened by wides and no balls costing 2 runs but no additional ball.
Ferro, Grant and Anuj Tiwari all got their seasons off to a flyer reaching the retirement score of 25. Lee and Anuj have begun the most sixes competition with one apiece. Anuj may have been lucky. His six flew into the tennis courts and the home side bemoaned not announcing their usual rule of 6 and out for such a shot.
Duncan and Ben Yarde Buller kept a very decent run rate going in the closing overs with a classic drive from Ben being the cricketing shot of the innings. This got us to a competitive 144-4; probably just about above par but certainly not a guarantee given Heads and Tails top order hitters.
As feared three of the top four home batters reached retirement scores and the scoreboard was rattling along. The Erratics did not help themselves with two comical missed run out opportunities and a couple of far more difficult dropped catches.
There were other challenges. Paul Molins suffered the first injury of the season with a painful blow on the fleshy part of his hand below his thumb. So we were down to 10. The other problem was the light. It was fading fast but ironically it was the brightness of the sunset that made batting impossible from the tennis court end. So from around halfway all the overs were bowled from one end.
We managed to slow the run rate down and Lee, Fraser and Duncan all chipped in with wickets – Duncan off consecutive balls. Heads and Tails got to 124-4 leaving us with a winning margin of 20 runs. It was very dark by the end – day night cricket had arrived for the Erratics!
And so to the Beer Engine and a cricket chat over a great post match spread of chicken, vegetable pasta and chips. The 90th year of Erratics history is underway!
