Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 01 May 2024 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 16 Runs

Match report Richard Lindsay reports...

While the Erratics are ready for the 2024 season, the April weather has been less cooperative and has so far restricted matches to plastic pitches. As was the case at Coaver Club against the Sunsets, although the sunset was hidden from view by the clouds that drizzled throughout, making it challenging to keep the fluorescent pink ball dry. Ben Yarde-Buller, making his captaincy debut for the Erratics, lost the toss and the Erratics were sent out to bowl first.

Sunsets made a steady start, reaching 20 runs before the first wicket fell in the 5th over to Lee Grant. An attempted pull shot ricocheted off the top edge and flew high in the air towards square-leg where yours truly (R Lindsay) took a spectacular back-pedalling, one-handed diving catch! (Certainly nothing to do with me changing direction at the speed of an oil tanker, or lacking the ability to move backwards effectively, and just about making up for it by having an absurdly long reach(!).). The skipper was second to strike as Krups juggled a catch at mid-on, before Anuj snapped a bail as he bowled an advancing Sunsets middle-order batter. Two retirees in the innings meant that Sunsets reached a score of 107-3 from the reduced 18 overs.

The long grass in the outfield made it difficult to gauge what would be a competitive score, but 107 would turn out to be too many for the Erratics. A dodgy bit of maths between innings eventually established that we’d require exactly 6 an over, seemingly gettable on the astroturf. After being reduced to 5-3 early on, Chris Ferro and Krups Nallala held the innings together. Chris retired on 26, but the slow outfield robbed him of deserved boundaries for his characteristically elegant shots, while Krups hit some huge sixes and returned from retirement to eventually finish on 37 n.o. But unfortunately it wasn’t enough – despite end-of-innings contributions from Hailwood and Weiler - because too many wickets went cheaply via a combination of ill-advised shots and run attempts, and the umpiring JK offered no mulligans. Pasties and beer in the bar softened the blow, but we’re just happy to be back playing, right? Some sunshine wouldn’t go amiss, though, and hopefully help us to clear the winter rustiness.
