They didn't like the overgrown lane...

Andrew's report is here:

With rain showers peppering us in the course of the afternoon, Erratics batted first in a 40 overs game. Their opening bowlers David Birch and Owen Smith who were both white haired bowled their full complement without a break. As it turned out in both innings all batsmen bar one struggled on a pitch that gave some assistance to the bowlers.

Aside from Lee who in his powerfully languid way drove the ball straight and inside out the Erratics batters struggled for fluency. Owen in particular induced false strokes with his consistent length and occasional off cutter. Many of us perished pushing in front of the wicket - Tipton held their catches well it should be said. After Lee went the wickets continued to fall until the tailenders - Martin and JK - showed what was possible and offered needed resistance.

Nonetheless we did not use 13 overs of our quota - a cardinal sin. And 77 seemed an unlikely total to defend.

After a rain delay and a splendid tea - including varieties of chocolate cake - Tipton started their innings the Erratics showed their mettle. Lee and Fraser opened the bowling and from the get go were controlled and threatening and
before long two wickets fell. Soon after one of their batsmen appealed successfully to the umpires to go off as the wind made the bowling unplayable!! On his return wind or no wind he was soon dismissed. Meantime our old friend Buckie (John Buckland) his partner was ominously comfortable whilst giving a running commentary - on his own luck, on the quality of the bowling et al. He gave two finger tip chances to Fraser but otherwise was moving closer to the total required.

However all was not over... Buckie decided to retire at 50 and wickets began to fall again.. the question was was it too late? Mark took a wicket and then Anuj bowled the next two batters for a duck. But they had wickets in hand
and the unlikely turned out to be impossible.

The lesson though is even 100 in these conditions could have been defended.

The sun did shine, we had a full afternoon of cricket, the dogs had a lovely
time... gallant losers we are.
