Broadclyst Pins v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 21 Aug 2024 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Antepenultimate is a word seldom deployed as opener for a match report. It’s quite possible that it has been selected here for the first time ever. Arguably, its use here reflects the inclusive nature of the Erratics – “newcomers welcome”. But in this instance, antepenultimate is not Erratics-related. It refers instead to the position of this match on the Broadclyst Pins fixture list for the summer season of 2024. Winter is coming. For them. For the Erratics, fully five and ten fixtures more remain to be enjoyed before the season closes.

Penultimate match of the season for the Broadclyst Pins will be against Clyst Hydon CC who were beaten two weeks ago by the Erratics. The Erratics have lost only one of their last eleven games, and that, as it happens, was to Broadclyst’s weekend team. Meanwhile, Broadclyst’s midweek team, Broadclyst Pins, have lost only one of their last eight games. The Erratics did win this fixture last year, but both teams probably approached this latest encounter with quiet confidence – or maybe more. Who knows? Now, you might say that all this is just a load of guff, but while it’s important to live in the moment, it’s also important to understand your place in history. Which of these two teams would make history today? And with what word will the next paragraph begin?

Ultimately it came down to a game of two halves. Broadclyst Pins batted first. In fits and starts, they scored 104. Then the Erratics batted, in the gloaming, and scored the winning runs with more than 4 overs to spare. You can see the details in the scorecard below.

Let’s enrich this report with some reflections from some of the Erratics as they munched pasties and quaffed ale after the game:

Umpire Jon Perkin asserted that the whole game had hinged on the stumping. “The stumping was the critical part of the game. The whole game turned on that stumping, the batter was going really well, scoring lots of runs. And then he was out.”

“I dunno”, said Paul. “The moment of the match for me was Lee’s dynamite catch, removing another dangerous-looking batter. And yes, coincidentally, it happened to be off my bowling. Allow me to take a bow”

Matt chipped in, “yes, I enjoyed Lee’s catch too.”

Said Richard Lindsay, “it was really lonely out there in the outfield, but Fraser moved me and the next three balls came straight to me. Amazing!”

“I thought we were ruthless”, opined Mark Hailwood. “We put them to the sword. Yes, as captain, Fraser was ruthless. He kind of ground them into the dust.”

“I had to be ruthless”, said Fraser. “I’m still physically broken after the Mystics tour. I suppose in that respect I’m a bit like my father. In this state, I had to get the game finished as quickly as possible.”

Anuj’s moment of the match was the massive six that he hit to win the game. Hugh happened to capture it on video, so it can now be seen in the Erratics WhatsApp group. No doubt it is already being viewed on a range of social media by cricket fans from Harberton to Hyderabad. “No, no”, insisted Anuj, “that’s not it! The comment I liked best was from their scorer, who said that the pull shot from a certain Jonathan Kirby had been ‘gently escorted’ to the boundary by one of their fielders.” Anuj is a very modest guy.

Collection of vox pops continued, but by this time Lee had already left, doubtless to go home to celebrate his 100th game for the Erratics – another game liberally splattered with boundaries he’d hit. Sadly, Krups still hasn't hit his hundredth six. It's coming soon, we're all quite sure.

So, let’s close with more from Mark Hailwood, whose verbal contributions were as profound as his bowling:

“We showed those doubters in the press. Doubters like Annie Chave who declared at Ottery a couple of weeks ago that we can’t chase down large totals. Well, I used that rubbish from Annie to motivate the team before we batted that day, and what happened? We chased down 223 in less than 40 overs. You could say that Annie was responsible for turning our season round. We’ve kept chasing those totals down, and we’ve done it again today.”

PS. People may or may not have uttered the exact words attributed to them above, but the gist of what they said is captured fairly, I think!
