Match report
Good things come to those that wait. That well earned pay rise, a lovely Sunday roast or this match report. However this is not always true. Take for example the ball on the Cheriton Fitzpane pitch. A ball that took so long to reach the bat that you could have comfortably finished off a sudoku before it even got close enough to hit. To say, the pitch was something of a pudding is like saying that world trade is a ‘little up and down at present’. Despite the pitch being diligently covered overnight it was safe to say that it was very much an early April wicket. While the square had been protected from the worst of the overnight rain, the outfield was more than a little spongey when the teams arrived. Questions were asked about whether we even wanted to play on such a dampened surface but we are erratics and we would probably play in an Amazonian swamp as long as there were some decent sandwiches and a Victoria sponge halfway through. That said, It was abundantly clear that this was going to be a low scoring affair.
Losing the toss and being put into bat was less than ideal as the promise of some afternoon sunshine meant that the opposition may have the advantage of batting in more favourable conditions. After a slow start with the ball struggling to get over a grasshopper shin height, Roger P proved that hitting a boundary was indeed possible before being caught. Duncan defied the gremlins in the pitch (and in his back) with a delightful hook pull for 4 before falling to a smart catch.. Suddenly, Erratics found themselves in something of a hole. Lee was out to an excellent, athletic catch. Anuj got one that wouldn't have looked out of place in a lawn bowls game and Oscar had the worst possible ball to start. As a response, one of the Cheriton dogs took to the pitch to protest in the dirtiest of fashions. However, there were enough batsman to get us out of the proverbial doo doo. Cometh the hour, cometh the Hugh who proved to be the glue that held our innings together. Showing off his full repertoire of hooks, pulls and cuts, he really was a joy to watch and provided the ballast that the Erratics innings desperately needed. Joined by James Smart, the pair pushed us towards a respectable total. WIth both soon departing, Fraser took on the challenge, cracking a quickfire 35 which included a pair of sixes that, in one spectators view, were ‘just silly.’112 may not sound like a lot (which it really isn’t really) but considering the pitch it was at least defendable.
Everything hinged on how well the pitch dried off for Cheriton’s innings. Hailwood and Anuj showed all their experience in keeping runs to a minimum in the opening overs. Making his debut on loan from Stokeinteighead, Lishoy bowled an outstanding spell that mixed skill and raw pace. Although he only picked up a single wicket, the fact that they struggled to score suddenly ramped up the pressure on the home side which they never really came back from. Smart bowled beautifully to take another wicket before the sorcerer of spin himself, Fraser Chave took to the stage. In a quite frankly stunning spell, Fraser bamboozled the opposition as he twisted the blood of the batsmen who found him almost impossible to play. Finishing with a 5 fer it was one of those ‘I’m glad I was there’ spells which will be discussed in depth in the months to come. With the opposition stumbling on the ropes it was left to Oscar to deliver the final blow. Fittingly, it was Fraser who took the final catch to wrap the game up and seal a well earned victory.
