Woodbury Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 03 Aug 2007 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs

Match report by Ollie Creighton

With the steep natural slopes down from the pavilion to the wicket, Woodbury cricket ground resembles something of a natural amphitheatre, and this end of week Erratics fixture at times resembled a gladiatorial contest in the finest tradition, featuring gruesome injuries and a titanic struggle between two fearless opponents.

Fielding first, the Erratics attack began inauspiciously with a wide but quickly found its feet. A key talking point was Creighton’s unselfish action of saving a certain four off his own bowling with his chin (see photo below), although the injury seemed to subsequently disrupt his line and length. ‘It’s a man’s game’ was the shout that went up from certain corners of the ground.

Highlights included Price’s change of ends, which paid immediate dividends, while the fielding was generally sharp, with a couple of expert run-outs.

A rare lapse in the field, however, provided another talking point. Having struck the ball to cover, a Sunsets batsman found himself with time to run to the other end and consult at length with his batting partner about whether to take the single. He made it back to his crease with time to spare having decided that the run was not on.

Mid-way through the innings the Sunsets’ overseas signing caused consternation with some antipodean big hitting, although disciplined bowling at the death by Orpen kept the target down to a challenging but seemingly manageable 145.

In reply, the Erratics started imperiously. A superb technician’s 30 not out from Ferro featured some late cuts straight out of the MCC handbook, while Richmond (photo right) followed with a bludgeoning 30 of his own.
Having started confidently, Kirby junior departed for a creditable 8 and Kirby elder maintained the scoring rate before departing on 24. Turner was defeated by a tricky skidding delivery, Guy Clarke was run out after contributing 26, while Orpen was run out trying to keep up the run rate.

Some lower order thrashing left Pearson and Price with a nailbiting finish. For the final over the ground transformed into a bubbling cricketing cauldron: 7 runs required off 3 deliveries …. then 6 off 2…. 4 off 1…. The stage was set, although a devil of a final delivery resulted in a single and a narrow loss by 3 runs.
