At midday things were not looking very promising. An e-mail went out from selector Penny Price to say:

Not good news I'm afraid. We now only have 8 for this afternoon's game at Tipton. We were nine but Andrew (McRae) has broken a bone in his elbow yesterday evening.


With Jonathan Kirby not sure whether he could move following a painful blow on the foot during the match the night before we were looking in a sorry state. But the Erratic spirit shone through and Varun persuaded a fasting Suhaib to play, Al Brunt was encouraged to leave the gym for an afternoon in East Devon (albeit to be a late arrival) and Jonathan manfully declared himself fit. Now we were 10.

Tipton offered us an 11th man – well boy – the enthusiastic but only 7 year old Brandon Shaw. Deals were also done to make the game more competitive with Tipton being offered first bat but in a timed game with no restrictions on overs for bowlers.


Things looked very positive when Lucky Bandhu bowled their opening batsman with the score at only 7. It was sadly a very long time before the high fives were seen again. Long time Erratic nemesis, Phil Tolley, and partner Robin Pickering dug in and slowly but surely built an impressive partnership. Skipper Phil Ellis, had limited bowling options and rotated our Indian strike force of Lucky, Varun and Suhaib almost throughout the innings.

Tolley gave two tantalising half (probably quarter actually) chances, one between keeper and slip and one to Jonathan (it would have been a stunning one handed catch if held). With Pickering (51) the two of them put on a depressing 182 for the second wicket; Tolley ending with a defiant 115 not out as Tipton reached 206-3 at tea. Lucky, Varun and Suhaib all took a wicket each as reward for an afternoon of bowling toil (they delivered 36 of the 39 overs bowled).

Tolley makes runs for fun at this level. Lord knows how many he has made over the years against the Erratics for first All Saints and now Tipton. In the second Erratics book the accounts of matches played in 1994 included a game (played at Lustleigh) against All Saints. Tolley scored 157!

Part of his success is an extremely dedicated and patient approach. He will quite happily pat back anything straight or threatening. Singles are accumulated and the poor ball is then hammered to the boundary with increasing regularity as bowlers tire. Tolley joined Tipton in 2007 and his first 5 seasons with them has scored 9188 runs at an average of 98.796 with 51 half centuries and 33 centuries! It is to the credit of our trio that they gave him plenty to muse about.

Tolley wants every run he can get so was decidedly aghast when tea was called when he expected another over. This only added to his sense of injustice as he felt we were timewasting when Martin Wright went down injured and whenever we changed our field to try and stem the flow. Competitive or what?

After the usual top Tipton tea we set about the reply. Five of the top six all got into double figures but nobody remained long enough to truly build a threatening score. Brunt (10) and Wright (10) started well and Kirby (28) and Bandhu (27) both struck the ball with some panache but fell just as they seemed to be rattling the opposition. Star of the innings however was opener Jan Heaton who gave a classic display of correct batting to compile 38 excellent runs as all around her was collapsing.

The tail failed to shut up shop with Suhaib (10) caught in the deep after a good start. That left just 7 balls to go and young Brandon to the crease. The Tipton team, keen to win but sensitive to the situation, agreed on a compromise. A slow underarm ball was delivered; Brandon swung and missed. Sadly for him, and us, it was straight.

In the Golden Lion we had much to muse on. We reflected that while Tipton had 76 year old Dave O’Higgins still turning his arm; we had 7 year old Brandon. There can’t be many games with an age difference between two players being 69 years! Another Erratic moment to savour.
