Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Tipton St John on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 6.00 pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Match Report by Jonathan Kirby:

We were lucky to get this game at all. Or were we? Yes, of course we were. It's better to be outside on a sunny afternoon playing cricket at Dunsford even if the wicket is a pudding and the Erratics captain (me) has decided to bat first.

"Zzzzzzz." This was the text suggested for the match report by Annie Chave. When drinks were taken at the 20 over mark, we had scored 23 for the loss of 3 wickets. In fact, in a 7 over period, starting at the 15th over, we managed just 2 runs, one of which was a wide. It wasn't the most exhilarating of games to watch. The only mercy was that, none of us were going to get tired as we worked our 5 over shifts as loan fielders for Tipton (who only had 9 players); no fielder really had to move.

Earlier, Forrester had lost his off-stump by J.Rodgers who bowled a really tight line and length and gave just 13 runs off his 8 overs. Wright was run out, having slipped on his attempt to return to his crease and seen a direct hit from mid-wicket. Chave, having batted really well, felt the pressure of the need to score runs and holed out to mid-wicket in an attempt to force the pace. It wasn't very pretty. It was warm, and humid, but at least we were playing.

In a way, our innings was summed up by Thistlethwaite, who battled 14 overs for 6 runs. It was possible to stay in, but it wasn't easy to score runs. No batsman got going, and several were out trying to force the pace. That said, the Tipton St John bowling was really tight, and yielded only 1 bye and 1 wide.

Tea was taken early, not long after 4pm. It was only delayed because we had to wait for the urn. We should still have been batting, of course. Later, some were to wonder whether the game itself should have started then because conditions were improving.

In a spirit of Erratic generosity, we gave Tipton St John 8 wides and 4 no balls, but it still took them till the 21st over before they could pass our total. A total of 120 would definitely have been competitive; just a shame that we didn't even come close to it. The slower bowling was more effective on this wicket: Phil Power bowled 6 overs for just 11 runs, taking 2 wickets, while Duncan Chave bowled without luck, but gave only 2 runs from his 4 overs.

The captain's twin objectives of giving everyone a game and not having to watch Phil Tolley score yet another 100 against us were met, but perhaps they could have been met even better if I'd asked Tipton to bat first. Maybe on that wicket, they would have struggled as we did. Maybe. We'll never know. Mea culpa!

But in the Royal Oak, or rather outside the Royal Oak, in the sun-bathed gardens overlooking the valley, in convivial company, it didn't seem so bad. We had at least played a game that had seemed highly improbable 48 hours earlier.
