Erratics Cricket Club Lost

Match report Match Report by Ed Keedwell:

This game, following hot on the heels as it did of the ‘Erratics Parody’ twitter account affair was perhaps never going to produce a positive result. It became apparent that there is only so far that unity of purpose and trust will get you (unless the purpose was to get to the pub early, in which case we excelled). The dressing room was however, a fairly chirpy place to be before the match, an atmosphere that was buoyed by Jeff’s offer of some impressive looking runner beans, perhaps the only time we’ll see a runner from now on following the ICC’s law change earlier in the year.

We batted first and opened with Ferro and Wright, and for the first two overs, things seemed to be going rather well with 16 on the board and no wickets down. The Newton St Cyres bowlers were bowling well, but nothing was to prepare us for what was about to come. Wright was out caught, Cook (M) was next and managed a 100% strike rate but was out two balls later caught at the wicket, followed fairly swiftly by Chave (D) (0) and Kirby (J). Suddenly we were 30-odd for 4 and one of the best batting line-ups that we’ve fielded in for a T20 game in recent memory was in tatters. This brought Oliver Kirby to the crease looking rather more like a baseball player than a cricketer chewing gum and with his baseball cap on back to front. Anyway, after playing some nice looking shots, the second Kirby was out somewhat unluckily driving at a wide one. Your reporter managed to hang around for a few overs with Ferro, who was still going well despite witnessing the carnage at the other end, but was plumb LBW in the 16th over for 9. Thistlethwaite defended well, but came and went which left Chave (F) to play some attractive shots and keep Ferro company to play out the full 20 overs which had yielded 82 runs, 48 of which were due to Chris.

Our skipper, Matt, was clearly keen to get stuck into the Newton St Cyres batsmen, so much so that we took to the field a good 10 minutes before the opposition strode out. He was clearly keen to take wickets too with a field that I’ve scarcely seen in an Erratics game, 3 slips, 2 gullies, leg gully, deep fine leg, mid on and mid off. Chris opened the bowling, clearly his contribution to the game thus far was deemed insufficient, and although the attacking field didn’t yield many runs, sadly it didn’t result in wickets either. Fraser bowled a tidy spell from the other end as well, but it was Matt who made the breakthrough with 2 quick wickets to slow the scoring rate and prolong the run chase beyond the 10-over mark. I chipped in with one further wicket, due largely to an excellent catch by Matt on the long-off boundary, but we were never likely to defend the total of 83 and Newton St Cyres wrapped things up in the 12th over.

And so it was off to the Crediton Inn to lick our wounds, talk about the forthcoming tour and tuck into an amazing spread laid on by Crediton Inn, including piping hot bhajis and samosas and a beer brewed with pink grapefruit juice(!). I thoroughly recommend the samosas but will be not be tempted to try fruit-based beers in the future.
