Frocester v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 02 Sep 2005 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report by Simon Orpen

And so the Erratics' travelling circus rolled into Frocester the week after the beer festival had left the ground. Luckily for us they'd left behind some beer which they were selling off for a pound a pint, perhaps as a way of deadening the super sharp reflexes of our fielding side. True professionals that we are however meant that the majority of us decided to leave the drinking until after the game.

Maybe this was a mistake in hindsight as we fielded first on an incredibly hot afternoon and were soon chasing leather all over Frocester's superb ground (and beyond!) Ed Thomas was employed as scorer and was revelling in the chance to use an electronic scoreboard for the first and last time in his Erratics career - he was kept busy and the Frocester captain took the generous/aggressive tactic of declaring on 263 leaving us a tricky eight overs to face before tea.

I won't bore you with the bowling figures except to mention Ken Horne's 2 wickets for 48 and Ian Lisk's 2 for 36. Erratics' fielding was, well, erratic with the exceptions being a superb slip catch by Cook senior and an outstanding one handed catch by Jim Thomson in an attempt to outdo Jonathan's showboating effort of the previous day! T. lewis should be remembered for his excellent 95.

Matt Cook and John Carroll saw to it that we went into tea undefeated on 16 still needing 248 to win - a big ask, as they say.

Both openers fell soon after tea, and after Jonathan Kirby was caught driving on reaching an aggressive 30 the dream team of Paul Molins and Chris Cook were together at the crease. With 20 overs remaining 146 runs were still required. They soon showed that a large score was chaseable on the superb Frocester pitch, dispatching anything short and driving the full straight ones beautifully. Captain Kirby let it be known that he was chasing a win and that nothing less would do. Chris made a superb 81 and useful and aggressive contributions were made by Simon Orpen, Sam Cook Ian Lisk and Paul Gladding. Such was the pacing of the innings we found ourselves needing seven off the final over achieved by a four, an almost suicidal single and a two.

As the sun set over Frocester Sam Cook pointed to the heavens where two jet planes high above were passing, their vapour trails intersecting to draw a cross - some took this as some sort of celestial blessing some were already in the bar offering to buy jugs of 'bellringers delight' at £4 a go only to find to their horror that Frocester are lager drinkers and that their jugs cost rather more.

Presentations were made to Frocester for their hospitality and to the man of the match Paul Molins for his superb 53 not to mention his keeping-the second day running a Molins had achieved this honour! All in all this was a superb day and much Adnams was consumed back at Epney by your match reporter and others!
