Anchor XI v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 04 Sep 2005 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report by Ken Horne

"Piu", "un", "foliates", and "zho" are just a few of the words which won’t be making an appearance in this match report, beyond this first pararaph of course. They are but a small sample of the vocabulary at the command of an Erratic, and serve to illustrate the towering intellects which were available to our Glorious Leader, Captain and Scrabble coach for the day. If only the Anchor had agreed to play Scrabble rather than Cricket we might have got away with a third win on tour.

Ian Lisk and Sam Cook opened the batting for the Erratics under bright skies. The threatened thunderstorms and rain were reported to be over Bristol and heading our way, but for now conditions were perfect.

An early run out for Sam (5), was soon followed by Ian’s dismissal for 16, bowled by Murray.

This bought Mezzo and Mega Cook to the wicket and they continued to score freely. Matt was bowled by Collins for 56. Paul Molins (62*) joined Chris and their unbeaten partnership took us to tea with a score of 245.

Was this enough, or indeed too many. (Andy Taylor had told Chris that we had more than enough as the score approached 200.) A declaration before tea might have given us time to bowl the Anchor out before the storm arrived.

Our man from the Met was in constant contact with head office; where Mrs Lisk was watching the radar and reporting the impending deluge’s progress through the West Country.

As the Erratics took the field for the last time on tour the clouds were closing in and one could smell the rain on the breeze.

Captain Hithcock went for a youth and experience combination. Sam Cook opening from one end with his mix of pace and variation in flight. At the pavillion end Dave "Fingers" Hale making a welcome return to Erratic action bowled a tidy spell of 8 overs and picked up both openers for 37 runs conceded. The first of these wickets had bought the left-handed Murray to the wicket. He nearly departed first ball, reprieved by a sharp chance going to ground behind the wicket.

Cook had been replaced by Jim Thompson before Simon Orpen came on to claim a wicket to add to his man of the match winning 3-fer on the day before (3 overs 1-32).

The once secure looking Erratics total was beginning to look under threat. Murray was scoring freely and despatching anything loose, and some which weren’t, with great power.

Meanwhile the sky was darkening.

Ken Horne was brought on for Hale. Modesty forbids that I bore you with a full description of the flight and guile demonstrated in this spell. Suffice to say that David Pearson, playing for the opposition, left the field ashen faced and disorientated after being done by a fizzer as he charged down the pitch. (This was definitely a different shade of ashen face and disorientation than that which he had woken up with that morning.)

Now it began to rain. The promised storm had arrived, not to frustrate our bowling attack as anticipated, but as relief from the Murray onslaught.

The umpires consulted with the captain, the fielders milled around, the batsmen stood their ground. "We’ll finish the over" and see.

The downpour lasted for all of three minutes.

Captain Hitchcock bought Ed Thomas for a farewell performance, and for a brief spell the double leg spin attack kept the boundary fielders busy. Horne (5 overs 2-28) was replaced by Lisk (2 1-24), then C Cook and M Cook served up the final course as Murray, unbeaten on 125, saw the Anchor home.
