Lustleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 08 Jun 2008 at Unknown
Erratics Cricket Club Won 78 runs

Match report There aren’t many choicer spots in England than Lustleigh cricket ground on a sunny day. And it’s all the better when dogs and small children are puttering about. After a period of about ten years when the Erratics’ sperm count had faltered, we seem to be on the road to recovery.

Lustleigh won the toss and sent us in to bat. They may have regretted this by the twenty-first over, when the score was 139 for 0. This isn’t our record first-wicket partnership, but I’d be willing to bet it was the most stylish. (For the benefit of statisticians, it’s been equalled once, by Richard Hitchcock and Bruce Coleman against the Wessex Brigade in 1971, and beaten four times, by Alan Robertshaw and Richard Hitchcock (143 v Morchard Bishop in 1978), by Roger Morris and Pete Colclough (151 v Amalgation in 1980), by Mark Burdis and Nick Bishop (159 v Ilsington in 1984) and by Owen and Matthews, whose given names have been swallowed up in the mists of time (an unbroken 169 against the Devonshire Regimental Depot in 1938).

Chris Ferro and Duncan Chave are beautiful batsmen. They hit cleanly and they hit hard. There was, to be sure, an early moment when Chris – almost as close to the bowler as to the wicket-keeper at the time – should have been stumped; but the dominant impression was of flawlessness.

Sam Cook looked slightly ashamed to be batting after that, and committed honourable suicide. Paul Molins, his stomach heaving from last night’s barbecue, larruped four boundaries and then festooned himself in front of a straight one. And when Chris Ferro eventually lofted a catch to long-on, Martin Wright, Jonathan Davies and Matt Turner kept the scoreboard rolling. (Mention should here be made of Nick Discombe, who launched his comeback by scoring one at a run a ball.)

This was one of those rare games when the average age of the Erratics was not significantly higher than that of the opposition, and we looked sprightlier in the field (Martin Wright hurling himself at the ball, Nick Discombe hurling himself over it). Once Matt Turner had taken a neat leg-side catch off Gareth Oughton to dismiss the impressive-looking opener, Sawrey-Cookson, it was fairly clear that Lustleigh would fall short of our total – though we gave them 38 extras to help their cause. The champagne moment came with Duncan Chave’s one-handed way-over-the-head catch at deep mid-wicket to dismiss Lustleigh’s most effective batsman for 48. For those with long Lustleigh memories, this man’s name was Wright – and he must be the only Wright in Lustleigh not related to Courtney. Phil Drewett and Len Harvey (umpiring) were there from the real old guard (and Mick Dray sitting in the pavilion, getting slowly sozzled on cans of lager). And the opening bowlers were Sawrey-Cookson and Manners-Chapman: double barrels are something Lustleigh has in common with Eton College.

After the game, I would have presented the John Lloyd Trophy to Chris Ferro, if I’d known where it was.
