Match report Match Report: Jeff Haynes

Dull November appeared to have stolen a march on October’s promise of an ‘Indian Summer’. At 10 o’clock on the 10th of the 10th of the 10th Exeter lay enveloped in mist and fog. The air was distinctly cool. Our Met Office friends, (so accurate in their prediction that rain would give way to a sunny evening at exactly 6.30pm on 13th July, when I played my first game at the Civil Service ground) were today assuring us that the mist would be blown away, leaving sunshine and 20 degrees at our scheduled start time of 12.30. At 12 noon, as the Erratics began to arrive, the chill remained in the air, the mist prevailed and the ground squeaked with moisture. With no Tedburn player in sight, stories were recounted of how they had arrived late for each of the last three years, and a pre-match visit to the King’s Arms seemed on the cards. Then, at 12.15, Charlie arrived to open the pavilion … “Sorry, but we’ve got it down on our fixture card as a 1pm start – you might like to pop down to the King’s Arms”. The Erratics resisted all liquid temptation, warmed themselves up on the climbing frames in the kiddies’ playground, and eventually got changed, only to emerge from the changing rooms at 12.30 into punctual and glorious sunshine!

Play began at 1.10pm. Only Andrew Forrester, Matt Cook and Phil Ellis survived from the Erratics team which won its previous encounter with Tedburn in July, then with just one ball to spare. Perhaps it was the memory of that successful Erratics run chase that weighed heavily on the Tedburn captain’s mind, for having won the toss he decided to put us in. The board was ticking over quickly, at 16 in the fourth over, when Andy was caught behind, the keeper making four or five attempts before finally securing the catch.

This brought Chris Cook in to join Chris Ferro. The appearance of a football rattle was a sign that the Erratics were looking for things to cheer. It’s clatter celebrated a classic square cut for four from Chris C which signalled his intent. The run rate quickly climbed to six an over after eight overs, and it soon became clear that the irritating clicking of the rattle would have to be used sparingly, for Chris C’s straight sixes and for the various landmarks which were to come, starting with a single for his 50 off the first ball of the 13th over.

At the other end, Chris F entertained us with a rare seven, comprising a run three and an impressive four overthrows, thrown the full measure from one boundary to the opposite one!

Drinks were taken at 148-1 off 20 overs. Scorer-in-chief Matt Cook began to philosophise on ‘Thursday being a Belgium sort of day’ (don’t ask!) … but fortunately the scoring continued at such a pace that he had to concentrate on the landmarks … Chris F’s 50, Chris C’s 100, and then the 200 partnership coming up in the 31st over. On 93, and looking for a single, Chris F was forced to return to his crease as a throw at the stumps hit the keeper’s knee. Unfortunately, he didn’t benefit from this let-off, as on 96 he edged the ball to the keeper. He had played a super innings and shared in a record (I’m guessing) Erratics second wicket partnership of exactly 250.

Armaan Malhotra joined Chris C who then nonchalantly pulled another ball for six to reach his 150. Armaan stroked 8 runs and Chris C moved on to 166 when the innings closed on 289 for 2. Chris received a deserved ovation for an innings of wonderful timing and tea time buzzed with talk of rewriting the record books. The other talk was of Tedburn being a strong batting side, and of their liking a chase, … but surely the asking rate of 7.25 an over would be beyond them?

Matt invited Mithun Mazumder to open the bowling, and he struck in his first over. Then Chris took a fine catch off Matt’s bowling in another all-Cook affair and Tedburn found themselves 0 for 2 after just two overs. Mithun bowled an excellent pace and line but it was his third wicket, a caught and bowled, which saw Tedburn’s reputedly best batsman on his way to the pavilion and clearly placed the Erratics in the driving seat.

There was no keeping Mithun out of this game. His low hard catch at short mid-off off my bowling (thanks!) was another strong contender for catch of the season. Chris Squire was perhaps the least lucky bowler, seeing two catches put down before eventually one stuck in Andy’s gloves. Paul Molins bowled a beguiling spell, and picked up another wicket, while Phil Ellis gave away only one single in three overs. For a short while it began to look as if Tedburn might bat out the full 40 overs as they gathered a partnership of 54 for the seventh wicket. Armaan and Chris F each tried their arm, Penny Price declined the invitation to bowl, and so there was no option left but to bring Mithun back on. Just for variation, he slowed his pace, and promptly knocked the last two wickets over. His final figures of 6.5 overs, 3 maidens, five for 30 speak for themselves.

After the match we retired to the King’s Arms and reflected upon our victory by 147 runs – a more than satisfying performance. Next week the season closes with … Tedburn once again!

Will we complete a hat-trick of wins.

Our fixture list says it will be another 12.30 start.

On both counts, time alone will tell.
