Woodbury Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 08 May 2009 at Unknown
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
A long, long time ago in a field not very far way The Erratics had their second game of the 2009 season. For many it was their first outing and for the rest, their first 20 over evening game.
It was certainly more spring than summer and sweaters were the essential element of kit. As it transpired a lengthy team warm up would not have been amiss, however The Erratics are not known for such formalities and as some of us have discovered these exertions can be more dangerous than the game itself.
We began by batting and our start was positive if not brisk with Richmond and Wright doing well against frustrating bowling. Richmond misjudged one and was bowled and Wright misjudged the readiness of his body and picked up a nasty thigh strain. Despite the assistance of a runner the injury proved too much of a hindrance and he was also bowled.
James Hutchinson, on debut, fell first ball but it must have been hard to concentrate in the conditions. Kirby, looking in control and at ease in this form of the game following a winter of indoor cricket, whizzed along until the local rules intervened forcing him to retire on 25. Other contributions of note were 13 from Ellis and 18 from D Pearson.
It has to be said, that rather like the May weather, the Erratics did not show their full potential and we sort of stumbled along to 105. This was never really going to be enough against the Sunsets, who could be regarded as 20 over specialists.
We managed to hold out for 17 overs taking 5 wickets but without a few early breakthroughs it was always going to be tough. There was an interesting stumping when the Sunset's number 2 sort of squirted a full length delivery slightly to leg. It is debatable that he really knew where it had gone and not for the first time stood out of his ground looking around to locate the ball. J. Kirby, keeping for the Erratics, was, as usual, quick off the mark and retrieved the ball. Still the batsman had not moved so the bails were promptly removed. The wicket shows in my figures so I'm certainly not complaining.
I'm sure Jonathan and I will be happy to discuss this with anyone during the season, though I'm not promising my recollection in July will be as accurate then as it is now. Neither am I promising that my recollection now is as clear as it was on the night, as you can probably tell from this report. I only have myself to blame for leaving it a fortnight to try and recall a fleeting couple of hours in a field that now seems far, far away.
