Dunsford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 30 Apr 2006 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report by

If the remainder of the season provides games as close as this opening one, a few Erratics should be examining their insurance policies.

A cool afternoon deteriorated into a witheringly cold evening. The Erratics won the toss and elected to bat on a strip which showed few signs of being nurtured during the close season. Clumps of coarse grass and large bare areas promised problems for the batsmen.

Initial predictions were fulfilled.

The main tendency was for the ball to keep low or shoot, making it difficult to play back. The Erratics started with Hinds and Knappett, the latter picking up the first wicket of the season in his second over. Knappett showed commendable control and hostility and was the pick of the bowlers. The fielding was of the usual Erratics quality, promising much early on (with a run out by Sam Cook) and falling away rapidly towards the end of the innings.

The teatime consensus was that, given the state of the pitch, it would be difficult to overhaul 160, a judgment which was confirmed as Knappett was bowled by a shooter. The crucial point was reached when Sam Cook joined his father. Between them they provided both stability and a flow of runs which made victory possible.

When Chris Cook was seventh out ("I lost my balance" – Oh to be able to lose one’s balance with such elegance!!) 11 runs were required with 4 wickets left. Hinds and the Pearson duo went quickly, leaving one run to be scored off the last ball.

Cometh the hour . . . Enter that most eccentric of Erratics, Jim Thomson, sans pads and gloves. The opposing bowler threatened to bowl round the wicket to him, but Jimbo, undeterred, nurdled him through gulley for the winning run.

Phew!!

This may have been the delivery that bowled Carl Knappett for a duck at Dunsford in the first game of the 2006 season. Matt Turner looks on from the non-striker's end.
