Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Newton Poppleford on Thu 29 Jun 2006 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 4 runs
Match report
by John Pearson
The evening was fine, the opposition hospitable. But for all this, the Riverside public recreation ground is soulless. It would be difficult to imagine Wordsworth producing “Lines composed at Newton Poppleford a few hundred yards from the River Otter . . .”. Perhaps T.S.Eliot could make something of it.
I write as one who suffered the indignity of conceding (nay, being hit for) well over thirty runs in two overs. Even allowing for this, the format of two overs per bowler and the batsmen to retire at thirty was profoundly unsatisfactory; Yet, this was probably the highest aggregate number of runs ever accrued in an Erratics twenty overs per side match. Given the total they were chasing, Newton Poppleford did extremely well to get anywhere near the required number.
The run glut started early, with Matt Cook and Jonathan Kirby helping themselves to 50 runs in under five overs. The gallop did not seem to be affected by the batting restriction. Save for Alfie Weiler’s being bowled by a very full full toss and Phil Power’s being run out, the momentum was maintained throughout the innings. Perhaps the highlight was Sam Cook’s straight six, which broke tiles on the pavilion roof.
The target seemed an unlikely one, yet when N.P. started their innings doubts began to emerge. Pearson’s unwonted generosity meant that after the first four overs the opposition were up with the rate. With the exception of Frank Pike’s and Sam Cook’s overs, this profligacy continued until the fourteenth over, which saw the appearance of Prosser and Weiler. The complexion of the game changed; each took three wickets for very few runs (Alfie’s victims included the N.P. top scorer) and with one over to go the opposition required twelve runs. Adam Thomas ensured that they fell four runs short.
And so to the “Cannon Inn”. Chicken and chips and a pint. Ah, Bliss!
