Match report Match Report: Greg Richmond

The evening was sunny, but surprisingly cold, as those stoic folks who forsook their sweaters soon discovered. The Erratics batted first and Martin Wright and myself made a brisk start to the innings, before Martin miscued one to mid-off. Jonathan Kirby and Martin Weiler both fell lbw, bringing Chris Cook to the crease. I was a little nervous at this point. The Cheriton Fitzpaine bowlers had delivered an obliging number of leg stump full tosses to me, and one I had wafted over the square leg boundary and straight through the back windscreen of Chris’s car. Chris was very good-natured about it ‘no matter – just enjoy your batting’ and a productive partnership ensued until I missed a straight one.

Chris Cook kept the scoring rate high towards the end of the innings with some elegant and clean hitting whilst Armaan Malhotra hit a fine six over midwicket.

Your correspondent missed watching the end of the Erratics innings as a particularly well struck blow from Chris Cook cleared the boundary and a high hedge some 20 yards beyond it – subsequent attempts to recover the ball were not successful. The end total was 195-8 – a challenging score.

Just how challenging the score was became apparent at the start of the of the Cheriton Fitzpaine innings. John Nagle removed both openers to catches at slip and gully, whilst Gareth Oughton’s speedy opening overs proved hard to get away as he took an early wicket with a fine delivery.

Cheriton Fitzpaine’s early struggles were compounded by some fine Erratics fielding, with Chris Fear in particular excelling – ‘an Erratic attacking the ball in the field ’ came the surprised cry as he swooped to prevent a run. Cheriton Fitzpaine began to recover pretty effectively as Potts worked his way to a stylish 61. His innings though was cut short by a moment of Chris Ferro magic. Potts hit a stinging off drive and was clearly irked to see Chris stop it at a deepish mid-off. Worse was to come for the batsman as Chris jumped up and threw down the stumps with Potts narrowly short of his ground.

Thereafter the momentum of the Cheriton Fitzpaine innings ebbed and wickets came at regular intervals. There was a chance for some ‘experimental’ bowling, with my non-spinning off-breaks and Gareth’s spinning (but not always landing on the cut bit) leg-breaks. The Cheriton innings closed well short, at 129-7, which included a generous helping of 27 extras, mostly wides.
