"Wow, guys, what a fielding display that was!" said the Ipplepen captain as we returned to the pavilion after the final wicket of the day had fallen. Erratics reading this might assume that he was referring to the Ipplepen fielding, or that he was making an ironic reference to Erratic capers on the greensward. Such an assumption, while understandable, would be wrong. We were massive. But you probably had to be there.

Leading from the front, as captain, Matt Cook made a huge personal contribution to this game. 2 of his 3 wickets owed much to great tactical thinking on his part. As I saw it, the plan was to bowl really well and pin the batsmen down with 5 great balls out of 6 before offering them a tempting half-volley which would cause the proverbial red mist to descent and the ball to be hammered straight to a fielder. It almost worked, though in both cases the fielders had to move because the ball didn't go straight to them...

Catch of the season was by Jeff Haynes, running several yards to his left at deep long-off and taking with both hands a ball that had been hit with phenomenal power. With all due respect to Jeff, I don't think anyone watching expected him to get anywhere near it. Utterly amazing. It had been a boundary all the way.

Second up was Ed Paleit who, moving to his right at cover pouched a ball that had also been struck with considerable force. And he made it look easy - which it definitely wasn't.

After opening spells from Nagle and Hooper had pinned the Ipplepen openers down, it was perhaps the 7 over stint from Sean Webb that had started to turn things our way. One excellent wicket, clean bowled, but the pressure also led to the first of three run-outs, a direct hit by Hooper leading to the dismissal of a disgruntled Ipplepen batsman who, in Erratic fashion, would have made his ground if only he had run his bat in.

All the bowlers did well, all 8 of them that Matt chose to use. They were all supported too by all-round excellent fielding. The Ipplepen openers were the only batsmen apart from Matt Cook and Sid Thomson who managed to make batting look manageable on a difficult wicket, but even they struggled to penetrate the field.

Jeff Haynes rounded off a memorable day in the field for himself by clean bowling the last batsman. Ed Paleit also added a wicket to his catch. This, to the mathematicians among you will leave two wickets unaccounted for - both of these were direct run-outs from distance, with batsmen nearly making their ground but not quite, one by Jonathan Kirby and the other by Matt Cook - you just couldn't keep him out of the game!

Smoke was billowing across the crest of Telegraph Hill and flames were rising to an improbable height from an old VW Beetle that had clearly run its proverbial race. The road was closed, traffic queued back as far as the eye could see and so it was that both Ed Paleit and I arrived a late at the game. By the time I arrived, Messrs Forrester and Phillips were entrenched at the crease. While Mark Phillips' bat was as impassable as he would later be when fielding at square leg, runs were clearly not easy to come by. Only Matt Cook with an imperious 75 and Sid Thomson with 24 made any real impression on the scorebook during our allotted 35 overs. In one particular over, Matt notched up more than 10% of our total, including two elegant 6s over mid-wicket. This was not consistent with the run of things, though there was plenty of running when the ball was struck towards the opposite boundary which not even Matt managed to reach - there were several 3s and an all-run 4 which said something about fitness, at least.

When Sean Webb struck a lofted on-drive for 4 off the first ball of the last over, Erratics were hoping for a final flourish, but by then they had already seen it. With just 134 on the board, we were all out with 4 balls still to go. Would it be enough?

Of particular note was the bowling performance of Ipplepen's young leg-spinner, aged 13 or 14, I think. He took a wicket an over for five overs and bashfully led the team from the field at the end to the huge applause not only of his colleagues but of the Erratics too. A great performance, and entirely appropriate recognition of it.

The Ipplepen openers began with poise and confidence. The scoreboard kept ticking and although the scoring rate wasn't high, it didn't need to be, and the wickets weren't falling. It didn't look promising.

Nil desperandum. One opener decided to try to push the rate. That was his undoing and from that moment onwards the pressure of the Erratics' bowling and all-round fielding performance took its toll. Being a 35 over match, the game was over well before the conclusion of the Ipplepen innings as their required run-rate had risen to improbable levels, but the end came in friendly and spirited fashion.
