Frocester (Tour) v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 01 Sep 2006 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report by Adam Thomas

The day of the match dawned grey and miserable, but Steve Berry said it would brighten up, and so it did. He himself was off to the Scotland Play Dough exhibition or something. In the event, it was to prove a canny decision.

After lunch at the George, several Erratics changed early and did a vigorous warm up, while - as Jim Thomson would have it - the more cerebral players took their ease.

Paul Molins was the captain of the day, and sent out Sam Cook and myself (Adam Thomas) to open the batting. The pair of us had managed a combined total of 173 runs the day previous. Not today. Frocester had fielded a very young team, but as we have come to learn, that can be a dangerous sign in this part of Gloucester. The young opening bowler promptly dismissed me first ball, and Sam not much later, with a lovely slower ball. At least I had discharged my duties early, and could concentrate on note-taking.

So: two down, Big Cook and Jonathan Kirby at the crease, and runs flowed until Chris nicked one behind. 64-3. Paul Gladding was next up, and continued his excellent form from the previous day, smashing boundaries around, including a Jayasuriya style lofted cut over point. Jonathan Kirby meantime was showing, as usual, all the pulling prowess of a Premier League footballer until he fell for 41.

Paul Molins came to the crease, and found the left arm medium pacer to his liking, hitting a couple of great drives back past him. Sadly at the other end, Paul Gladding was caught behind. Just before this, the electronic scoreboard had malfunctioned badly, or perhaps ringer Henry had caused it to? Either way, the attention of several senior Erratics was required to resolve the problem. Perhaps drained by this, Simon Orpen missed both of his deliveries, and was bowled by the second.

Derek (great to see him again) and James B went in, then out - Paul Molins re-enacting the Burrows dismissal the very next ball for the benefit of those who had missed it, spooning to short fine leg.

In the George before the match, somebody was overheard saying that the Erratics were fielding four number elevens today - not so. Two over-populous sides meant Jim Thomson had gleefully snagged 12th place in the order. Wickets had fallen so quickly the Erratics had been caught sans culottes and with the vigilant Hitchcock umpiring, David Salter was in danger of being timed out. Jim Thomson forsook his place at 12, and indeed any protection, and strode to the middle like some storied warrior, no pads, no gloves, just a bat and a sound technique, both of which he pressed into service to see off the hat-trick ball.

In response, Frocester brought back their opening bowler, and while Jim was busy donning his pads, the innings was brought to a close as it had started at the other end, with a golden duck. 166 for the Erratics, when 100 more had not been enough the year before. A very good tea was taken, and plans were hatched to defend the small total.
