Match report
Match Report: Ed Keedwell
A rather soggy Dunsford greeted the hardy souls who turned up to play one of the tightest games of the season, reduced to 16 overs a side. Chris lost the toss, but declared that the Erratics would 'brave the weather' to which the opposing captain agreed with some haste given the driving rain. A combination of some tight bowling by Phil and Greg and a saturated outfield kept the scoring rate low in the first few overs. (This was the first time that I've played in a game where the ball landed on the pitch with an audible 'splat'). Then, although the ball was increasing in size and slipperiness by the minute, Philippa and Penny bowled well. Penny in particular, mixed it up and bowled a number of wicket taking deliveries, although was perhaps too self-effacing and at one point 'keeper Al Brunt, asked her tongue-in-cheek if we should recall a batsmen who she said should not have got out to such a poor delivery!! Myself and Sam Cook finished off the bowling and the Sunsets ensured that they would open their bowling with a dry ball by hitting the final delivery of their innings into the Exe.
Sam Cook and Greg Richmond opened the batting for the Erratics with Sam unfortunately LBW getting one that kept low first up. Batting was clearly not easy on this damp pitch, that was until the partnership between Al Brunt and Greg Richmond who upped the scoring rate and brought the Erratics back into the game. However, when Greg went for 49 (so close!!) there was still work to be done and Chris Ferro came to the crease and finished things off in the final over with Phil Ellis providing sterling support at the other end.
Both teams retired to the Royal Oak to dry off, drink ale and eat sausage and chips, unaware that we would all be fined by Peter the next day for allegedly roughing up the pitch for the Mystics-Erratics Centenary game. The argument that rugby boots would have been more appropriate than spikes apparently holding no water with the Club President.
