Teign Valley v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Mon 29 Aug 2016 at 11.00am
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Krupakar reports...
A wonderful day of cricket at a wonderful location where the Erratics won the Stephen Fisher trophy for the first time since 2007. It was the Erratics who batted first and bowled twice before chasing down the target in the second innings. The score card does not allow us to select the order of the innings though.
Opening to bat, Erratics were off to a great start in the first innings from Jonathan and Fraser in what seemed to be a difficult pitch to bat on with quite varying bounce. Fraser continued his form from where he left in the last few matches timing his shots to perfection.
Jonathan looked great until a nasty edge off the bat from a bouncing ball hit him on the face. It turned out to be quite some injury that took 7 stitches to put the damage back to heal. Looked like a no-so-good sign but everyone was relieved to see him back towards the end of the day on a high spirit as always.
Meanwhile, Erratics marched on to get 120 runs after good knocks from Chris Cook and Krupakar and well supported by Martin Weiler and Phil Power. What followed was some disciplined bowling and fielding from Erratics which did not make things easier for the Teignvalley batsmen who ended up at 99 runs in 20 overs. Worth a mention is Gareth’s spell with an economy rate of only 0.75 from 4 overs of which were 3 maiden overs, a stunning slip catch from Phil Power, sharp fielding from Mark Phillips and three catches from Matt Cook who replaced Jonathan in the field.
A first innings lead of 30 runs and the choice to decide the proceedings for the second innings left the skipper Mark Hailwood with more questions than choices. But a good lunch in between the innings at the nearby pub in a warm sunshine seems to have provided the perfect decision making time (which turns out to be a great choice) at the end.
After a great time with the ball, Erratics bowlers did not feel a bit tired and were ready to have a go yet again. Soon the 20-20 spirit turned into a 40-40 spirit and our bowlers continued the great form by taking wickets at regular intervals.
With a target of around 120, still the game could have been anyone’s. However, Erratics saw a steady opening from the skipper and important contributions from Martin Weiler and Andrew Forrester.
While the pitch was still favouring the bowlers and the batsmen playing cautiously, and just as when the Teignvalley team was probably thinking of getting a grip back on the game, enters Matt Cook, who had some other ideas.
To summarize, a great knock with smashing boundaries left everyone admiring. As much as my memory goes, I could remember four or may be five balls defended by Matt while the rest were amazing hits all over the ground which left the opposition with no options but to endure until the end. Soon enough, the end did not took a long to come along.
A proud skipper received the trophy and we all headed to the pub to enjoy the rest of what was an amazing day of cricket in the beautiful Teignvalley.
